can someone help me to understand what is the importance of land reclamation in landscape design

Context? This is a very broad and vague questions. In the us it is sometimes required for major land disturbance activities to have a reclamation plan as part of their permitting for the activity (mining is one example, quarries are another). There also has been some movement to reclaim old industrial sites to reintegrate them to the urban fabric around.
