This is not an ad, but a testimonial. I, too, dislike how the exam is given and graded. Let alone that until recently, there really was no good way to study for the exam besides the review classes, if you are lucky enough to be in an area that has them. I took a review class and it did help, but what really sealed the deal were the PPI books. I…[Read more]

Meh, I say postpone your graduation as long as you can! You can see what the job market is like!
Are you looking into permaculture concepts at all?
When I was with the NJDOT we would do little wetlands within highway cloverleaf loops, and Bald Cypress was often a tree of choice. Yes, they can grow that far north. Wetlands like that aren’t much…[Read more]

Cool idea. It reminds me of the floating agricultural islands in Mexico.

Maybe this is already an area of study in FL, but your location makes me wonder about sustainable urban forests in areas with close-to-surface groundwater. Understand – all I’ve seen of development in FL is islands and channels…What if boulevards were planted with cypress and were also water channels – like Venice filled with wetland…[Read more]

I passed the LARE and earned my license, but I must agree that the availability of useful preparatory materials is severely lacking. I passed all of the sections the first time, so I never participated in the review process.
I did not have a problem with the physical experience of the exam, the test site, time allowed, etc. I may have been…[Read more]

I think the ferns were predominant in the Mesozoic era which includes the triassic and jurassic periods. Unfortunately I didn’t get to see Ponyo when it was in the theatres…..looking forward to it on DVD as I am a huge Miyazake fan.
What did you think of the glow-in-the-dark plants? It reminded me of velvet black light AC/DC posters…ha! They…[Read more]

I recommend to all who want to pass any portion of the LARE, especially section E, to attend the reviews at the University of Georgia in Athens, GA. I struggled a little bit with these exams, however, I took the review at UGA and passed. They know what they’re doing.

I am completely with you on this. Change has got to be a driving force if the profession is to evolve and adapt to the current demands. I too am beyond the point of utter rage with the archaic, profit driven way this test is administered(handed down rather) and I am seriously entertaining the notion of dropping ASLA and the profession as a whole…[Read more]

I read an article in Wired about the making of the film. He did indeed have horticulturalists on staff, as well as botanists and others. His team actually created a an encyclopedia of sorts with a classification system (complete with diagrams, measurements, habitat, etc from what I understand) for all the plants and animals in the movie. This is…[Read more]

I went to a red line and questioned if all mistakes were addressed. Two minor errors were marked but there was no critical mistakes marked up. I was wondering if they look briefly at the problem and mark up the first 2 things they see and move on to the next one. I left feeling like I wasn’t sure that my overall solution was correct.
I also sat…[Read more]

Yeah, thanks Tanya, interesting comment..Check out Ponyo if you havent’ seen it yet – I think the best yet, especially in terms of the imagined landscape, although it IS hard to beat “Totorro.”
Yes, it would be interesting to see if these images influenced childrens visions of nature..Personally I grew up in TinTin land..I have always been…[Read more]

I think all this is very true, and many articles have been written, about how LAs must participate on a bigger level in the political sphere.

I’m so glad someone else has been thinking about this! The way landscape is portrayed in film and media makes me wonder how it forms a landscape aesthetic in children.
Miyazaki has an astounding view of nature – I particularly love ‘Spirited Away’ and ‘My Neighbor Totoro’ – or really any of his films – he changed the way nature was represented in…[Read more]

Good points Leland, and I think you’re echoing a lot of what others have already said.
It seems the last page or so of comments is circling nearer to what I think is the core issue- Being that there may be a fundamental difference in the way some of us think about the well-being of the profession as ‘reactive’ or ‘proactive’ both in the way we…[Read more]
