I might add that changes to the environment of older trees (soil moisture, humidity, reflected heat, etc.) can be devastating.
The argument that “these trees are worth a lot of money” seems irrelevant to me.
To “save them” temporarily only to have killed them a few years hence is pointless and will result in both great expense for the owners later…[Read more] -

a cheap slogan, that could be used for advertising our profession? Have you seen the architecture ads that show a screaming woman, and they say something along the lines of “the house is falling apart, everyone is fighting, we need to schedule an appointment for counseling…with an architect”
I really wish ASLA would come up with something like…[Read more]

yeah, that’s pretty similar to the ASLA definition, actually, which is:
Landscape architecture encompasses the analysis, planning, design, management, and stewardship of the natural and built environments. Types of projects include: residential; parks and recreation; monuments; urban design; streetscapes and public spaces; transportation…[Read more]

The reason that Dr. Hanson said this about Copenhagen is because he doesn’t think carbon trading will work. The only reason the skys of the US and Europe are cleaner is because #1 better technology #2 less manufacturing (moved overseas). Although it sounds like a good idea on paper it just doesn’t work. If it does pass it may turn out to be a luc…[Read more]

Last year I met a saleslady who repped this company’s products: She claimed they could handle the sun and heat of Las Vegas, where I work, or did at least, until August. I never did have the chance to spec them for a job. They are quite pricey…the stuff of movie star’s homes. They’re based in Santa Barbara, so there must be a rep for your area.

Trace, Don’t loose faith… and sadly I am guilty of being an arborist, a trade I still consult in. I have conducted quite a few tree preservation plans. Some work, some don’t. And as unfortunately as it is individual plants ability to withstand construction damage varies as well as its overall health and vigor. And of course the economics of…[Read more]

a few years ago we did a team building exercise in our office which is interdisciplinary consisting of LA’s, planners and ecologists. We asked each group to write a definition of their profession and one of the other two. It is a real interesting exercise if you have time.
For LA here is what we came up with:
Landscape Architecture is the…[Read more]

Good point Trace, I agree that some progress is better than no progress (by definition…)
John Michael Greer addressed this topic just yesterday, with a different conclusion:

This is a blog I started a couple of years ago, and although I haven’t added much to it lately, I will be doing so soon. Now that I am working for a planning department there are plenty of new topics surfacing that I would like to discuss. I’d love to hear input and discussion from others about some of the articles already written,…[Read more]

When I think of New Urbanism, I think of TND – traditional being the operative word. Our best example of this in SC would be a development like I’on. Maybe progressive urbanism is more modern? More hip, liberal, throw in any other related words here that imply NON-traditional.
Just a guess.

At the risk of barring myself from ever being in the employ of corner or his cohorts I’ll agree, from what I’ve seen and read despite the fact that all of my professors and many of my colleagues hold him in the highest regard. I’m a bit surprised to read a comment from Trace about such a virile theorist, philosopher, and …collager in the profession.
