I’m still having trouble envisioning this, too. Could you use berms to add height instead of a retaining wall?

I stand corrected, what kind of fence are you building?
A few pictures of the yard would really help.

So i got a good deal on fencing 350$, decided to incorporate pebbles and grass . the space is about 30 by 15 ft. Re using Plants while incorporating more , trying to have water feature with 10 by 10 pergola feature provided by owner. But how can i add heights to the yard with water and building feature ? should I have retain walls ? because the…[Read more]

Here’s a good quick read on dogs and landscaping: http://landscaping.about.com/od/lawns/a/dog_landscaping.htm . With your budget, I doubt you can do everything they say (hardscaping is probably out of the question, for example).
I think we need more info, like Nick said. What’s the existing site like? -

Interesting blog. I question his numbers a bit based on my own participation in farmers markets, but his point is valid with some good suggestions, and something to consider.
Education is key, for professionals and citizens. Understanding the world around you is essential for good planning and life decisions. Greenwash is a concern, but so is…[Read more]

I would spend the money on seeds and fencing and soil improvement behind the fences..Dogs and plants do not go together..My landlady had a successfu plant/animal garden because she had fenced off all her plants with salvaged wrought iron fencing, about 2-3′ h igh, and all that could be accessed by the dogs were paths through the garden, with the…[Read more]

Gee I thought I could contribute to this conversation. However, I did a quick search on Peak Oil and how many things are actually made from oil, and then I came across an article from a farmer in New York with a blog page. What seems like common sense on growing food locally takes a turn in his rumination. I will admit that I am more reactionary…[Read more]

$1000 is your construction budget?
You’ll have to be real creative and employ some adaptive re-use on that budget. You could easily expend that budget on plants alone for even a small backyard. So that might be where I would focus. Try to focus on the fundamentals using plants-privacy, viewframing, color, texture, scent, shade and shelter, etc..…[Read more]

I would go to asla.org and search under ‘resumes’ under the ‘job link’ tab and open as many portfolios as you can handle. You could also take a look at the myriad folios here for layout ideas.
My advice: keep it simple, we’re not graphic designers. Name, date, scale, north arrow (if nec) drawing title, key/legend is about all you need. I like to…[Read more]

You are making two points. One is identical to mine, one is extremely contradictory.
First, we can and do make the best possible choices within their scope of work. There are more small things we can do as individuals and professionals. Eventually the talk and philosophy becomes applicable to everyday life. I hope sooner than later.
Second, oil…[Read more]

Interesting comments and thoughts. I enjoyed the clip of the bottle game and it makes you think about how we do design for pure function, how we design for liability and how we value engineer the hell out of project so they are not fun. Seems like the easy way out and as designers we need to think more about the user experience if we want to…[Read more]
