Trace One, can you provide links to the specific New Orleans projects you are referring to? Thanks.

Some projects where landscape archs are loosing out include Atlantic Yards in Brooklyn and the San Diego Waterfront plan, as well as the redevopment of New Orleans, as far as I can tell..I have had personal experience WRESTLING archs and engineers on some low-income housing design and commercial building design in the Hamptons…just off the top…[Read more]

Great points Tim, and an interesting discussion there. It is interesting the terms of “place practicioners” and “the future of spatial practice” as architectural goals being brought up (never once mentioning landscape architects). But many of the points that they brought up could also directly relate to our field as well. Working more closely with…[Read more]

“First, I must say that while OFTEN hand graphics are better received by clients, but that is not always the case. Often, the problem with computer drawn plans is that they look to cold, where the problem is really not that it is rendered by a computer, or in photoshop, but the methods used to make the drawings are not up to par. Mid-Atlantic Native Plants 16 years, 8 months agoThat’s great. I’m a member of the Maryland Native Plant Society and try to use natives as much as possible in my design work. I’m way behind you in terms of knowledge but I’m working on it and I’m passionate about it. I think your photo archive will be useful for me and anyone else interested in using native plants.

Mid-Atlantic Native Plants 16 years, 8 months agoMostly I use it to teach myself plants. I’m a member of the Virginia Native Plant Society and lead field trips, but I still have a lot to learn about what grows around here. I also get a lot of requests to use the photos for books, brochures and presentations. In most cases I let people use the photos free of charge to encourage the use of natives.

These markets need to be developed in the good times. Also, we should consider publishing our personal views/ observations in local journals as our careers advance / falter. Being generous in the good times with our time, counsel and hospitality can keep the mine shored up while we take to substitute jobs (if necessary) when it’s tough.

I’m sorry I missed the conversation. This is an important topic. It might, perhaps, be more important to be vigilant about the work we already do instead of looking to ‘fringe’ markets. Building architects, many of them unemployed, are also looking to ‘diversify’ – and gosh, doesn’t the landscape look interesting. So many timely issues about…[Read more]

Here’s that book I was thinking of:
Energy-efficient and environmental landscaping : cut your utility bills by up to 30 percent and create a natural, healthy yard
by Moffat, Anne Simon.
I’m sure there are other similar books. -

Concrete doesn’t have to be completely crushed. You can always use it as urbanite: http://www.terranovalandscaping.com/blog/2007/02/07/90/
It’s probably easier to reuse pavers, but, unfortunately, pavers are more expensive. So maybe it’s a matter of identifying areas that are likely to be used farther into the future vs. those that are likely to…[Read more] -

Interesting points have already been served up on this topic. But working in Los Angeles for almost a decade now has given me a closer perspective. One of the issues is SF, Boston and NYC are served by prominent Landscape Architecture programs at Berkeley, Penn, Harvard etc. These programs offer opportunities to connect with a large percentage of…[Read more]

Good point Melanie. I believe everyone should populate drawings with people and entoruage to help animate the image and give it much needed context and scale. I’ve been very aware of how SketchUp has helped visualists with easy placement of people into views, but also how trapped many have become with leaving the SU components untouched without…[Read more]

“I would argue that we all should have the traits of patience and adaptability to thrive as landscape architects. If you worry too much about who gets to do what, it probably is not the best profession to be in. Not because you should roll over, but that you need way more patience and adaptability to deal with those other things (water, weather,…[Read more]

no, it is not academic..it is real. Why don’t we just plan for a long life?
But, it seems that so many projects are “upgraded” before they are even close to reaching maturity that planning for reuse might not be a bad idea…
