The Sustainable Sites Initiative 16 years, 8 months agoI’m glad to see someone else interested in SSI! I’m working on a children’s garden project for the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center. We’re designing the project to the preliminary draft SSI credits in hopes to create a sustainable landscape project, test the credits and criteria and eventually hopefully become a pilot project.

Golf Course Architecture & Design 16 years, 8 months agoRyan, while I agree with your assessment of renovation projects being the niche to look at these days, it takes the right client to take a “chance” on these renovations these days. With golf rounds down nationally 25-40%, it is somewhat of a leap of faith for owners to renovate their course to try to spark increased rounds. Yes, there are several…[Read more]

“I’m not sure how to respond to your point, because it is not exactly clear to me what that point is.”
Hmmm, then let me attempt to rephrase my original point.
Isn’t it time and isn’t it important enough to utilize our unique design skills across the board including our representations of figures (people) within our designs? Alright, granted that…[Read more] -

Golf Course Architecture & Design 16 years, 8 months agoHi Chad! Thanks for joining the group and posting a comment. You’re correct that new course building has slowed; however, I think this slow has fostered an opportunity to be creative and find ways to keep course design moving. Rather than new course construction, I have seen a high increase in existing course renovation. As existing courses…[Read more]

My particular professional interest lies in innovative residential and resort landscape design so I tend to have my eye geared towards that end of the profession.
I find a tremendous amount of cutting edge talent in Southern California and try to visit S.Cal. as often as possible to view innovative new works of sculptural landscape architectural…[Read more]

I’m not sure how to respond to your point, because it is not exactly clear to me what that point is. First up, I am in the well-populated school of belief that hand graphics trump computer-generated ones, hands-down, anytime and anywhere. Computer and other graphics generated digitally certainly have their place and are powerful and persuasive…[Read more]

“I’ve always wondered why there is such a standardized look to LA graphics, from the text to the Leggitt marker style. Not to say that the style isn’t effective. But especially in school, divergence from this style was highly discouraged or even penalized.”
Agreed completely… Leggit is highly stylized, and it works… for Leggitt. But do we…[Read more]

I’ve always wondered why there is such a standardized look to LA graphics, from the text to the Leggitt marker style. Not to say that the style isn’t effective. But especially in school, divergence from this style was highly discouraged or even penalized.
These days it is easier than ever to vary the visual style of a computer graphic, yet nearly…[Read more]

Thanks Joe!
We definitely don’t want the tree to have that situation. We think that adding combination drainage/air circulation perf pipe will help with that issue. If we can get the pipe to circumvent the dripline and get some pipe running up into the dripline, it will help.

To address the comment that (Southern) California LA’s act like decorators, one reason for that perception may be Los Angeles’ reputation as a fundamentally “private” city that lacks open space despite its beautiful setting–there are simply more opportunities for high end residential than for public work. Firms like Mia Lehrer and Ahbe as you…[Read more]

Pete,
From one K-State Grad to another…I have 15 years in Florida with our live oaks. Live oaks are hardy trees, which like dry feet. The only concern with live oaks are when the site is raised thus creating water well within the drip zone. If grading create water retention area in the root zone, then the long term result (10-15 years) the…[Read more]

Spurlock/Poirier is a very good firm, as are some other design firms in both San Diego and LA. I guess the question is what is “hot” design, and is that necessary good design? Being “hot” is usually associated with being more avant garde or leading edge, which tends to be represented by bolder or flashier designs. However, the Cal Polys and many…[Read more]

All successful design is a collaborative effort which includes the client, the land, the programming and the designer. All great design utilizes the existing landscape to capture a unique vision of each of these elements in the most creative and functional manner.
