I would love to see a Permaculture designer speak at ASLA! I think permaculture in general has a lot to offer the world and LA’s especially.

I think the lawyers are just taking advantage of a situation where people have a freedom to do anything, anywhere, and no one is ever there to make them think twice. To a large extent, the freedom to do what we want is a good thing. It’s just that people need to understand there are boundaries. Since the boundaries aren’t apparent, people do…[Read more]

Design Implementation 16 years, 9 months agoI would like to think that it is the LA who knows best, but sadly I feel that the contractor is the one who is going to be the key in creating the finished project. I would love to get to know my contractors well enough to find out there likes and dislikes but I never seem to be able to work with the same one over again, the market is so cutthroat…[Read more]

Open the pdf in Acrobat, and under File > Document Properties there should be an Initial View tab. That should allow you to set what you’re looking for.

I’ve missed out on the last week or so of replies on this thread because I was out dangling myself off mountain sides, fording rivers, and sleeping in remote wilderness.
Anyway, I think everyone brought up great points. The question stands, where is the line?
Roland, you once again bring up a great point regarding perception. I think perception…[Read more]

My senior project in college was on the dutch shared street called a woonerf. The idea, for anyone who hasn’t heard of them, is that streets are safer when everyone (pedestrians, bicyclists, drivers) shares the entire street, as long as cars are not allowed to go more than about 16 mph. The separation of sidewalk and street is often only a visible…[Read more]

It depends upon your interest. For theory, try Ecology, Community and Delight by Ian Thompson. Leslie Sauer has a good one on restoration called The Once and Future Forest. For large scale landscape ecology try Designing Greenways by Hellmund and Smith.

I studied in Montreal and it seems that what the companies are looking for in that city is people with very good CAD and Photoshop skills, unlike what I’ve seen in California so far. Even though most of our final rendering was done by computer, we always had the choice to produce it in the form we wanted and all the work before the final rendering…[Read more]
