does it have to be sketchup to out put the final information? could you make the map and then nam and color thefaces and then input the square footage into excell to do the computations via formulas? this way you print out the map with square footage and then you enter the square footage into the spreadsheet and it would pop the info out. just a…[Read more]

i’m glad you think this would work, the LandFX thing is really cool but has one problem… no one knows how to use autocad or even LandFX for that matter. This is the whole reason i need it in sketchup so that the monkeys running sketchup can push a few buttons and it will spit out what they need. this is all new to everyone here so it cant be to…[Read more]

you could easily make a matrix in excel to calculate all of the hour and make a simple projection but I am assuming that you would like to have the digital plan and then tag that plan and get an instant estimate of time, cost, labor etc. so if I understand you correctly you will bring in the Google earth image into SketchUp and then create faces…[Read more]

celeste dolbec replied to the topic Best design for raised planters – in the forum DETAILS & MATERIALS 16 years, 10 months ago
As a landscape designer in Maine I can tell you you will definatly need insulation in concrete planters in cold climates. Building types of insulation will work or you could use burlap, woven container fibers or hay. I’d also plant the perennials away from the edge. Eight inches is pretty thick so you could probably get away with an insulation…[Read more]

well here is the situation.. I am currently working for ValleyCrest Landscape maintenance and am working with a guy doing estimating. i have introduced to them sketchup and how it can drastically reduce their time and effort in gathering sq. footages by doing the linework in sketchup then clicking on faces to tell what the area is. (the models…[Read more]

I know it’s a stereotype, and maybe I overstated the point, again.
But I think if you look at it in terms of professional priorities; the LA is concerned with the interface of people and things first, while the engineer is concerned with the interface of things and things first. Maybe this is a stereotype, but I can only speak from personal…[Read more]

Chris Whitted replied to the topic How long to keep university work in Portfolio in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 16 years, 10 months ago
I’m roughly where you are career-wise, and I do still have some university pieces in my full portfolio. If they demonstrate something you have not been able or had opportunity to do professionally (a type of work or project, a particular skill), I see no reason they shouldn’t be there. Just be prepared to talk about why, because it will be noticed…[Read more]

I think your third paragraph really hits home on the crux of at least one major issue that spans both land use and design considerations when it comes to regulations and safety. Some of our (people in general, not just LAs) work and technology has lead to an increase in the accessibility of places that are inherently more dangerous. I think in…[Read more]

I would have gone into the “public health, safety, and welfare” phrase, but as I originally pointed out that didn’t seem to be the direction of the subject. I personally believe that in the design world we are a bit over-regulated in terms of protecting people from themselves and that whole lack of common sense and personal accountability. And I’d…[Read more]

I don’t think and wasn’t trying to imply you were even a bad citizen, let alone terrible. : ) But you do present a textbook example of why the regs exist and why they are important. They can’t post all the regs at each trailhead because of how many there are – it is your responsibility as a user to know the rules for any given area you plan to…[Read more]

The issue last September was a broken website. They upgraded the site and database and there were apparently ‘issues’. It was down for about six weeks if I recall right. I know this because it was right when I was laid off and needed it most. : ) Given that resumes are still being posted, I don’t think this latest drop in job postings is a…[Read more]

I think, more than anything, I started this thread to play devils advocate as well. I don’t necessarily disagree with all the regulations at the res, but it did make me think about how much our physical environment is dominated by non-physical barriers and limitations.
I too was hoping this discussion would steer itself toward more of a…[Read more]

An interesting thread.
A tip to water enthusiasts regarding PFD’s. I live in Truckee, CA near Lake Tahoe. Last year there was a news story about a middle-aged gentleman in relatively decent physical condition and noted as a good swimmer who was knocked off his boat by a wave and drowned. Why did he drown? He wasn’t going very fast. He didn’t hit…[Read more]
