Somewhat agree. One must have skills that can be billed. The easiest to acquire is CAD.

EGM on the 15th of July of 2009
Please attend the EGM and participate in one of the few democratic procedures left at the LI.Whatever your views, please check the facts first and make your mind up later. The result is largely irrelevant, as the incumbent Board has made it quite clear int he past that they not feel bound by EGM voting…[Read more]

as complex as the topic is comes down to one issue, money. If you have someone who is not performing to the expectations of the team then you loose effeciency, if you can hire someone who brings in a needed skill set and adds effeciency then they are the person to hire, they add the potential to add money to the firm (if tghe work is there), and…[Read more]

I am looking at a general topic… what is your experience with dealing with other disciplines in a team attmosphere? How have you interacted with clients? Can you promote enviromental / sustainable issues if you are on the lower rungs of the totem pole? Are you more often the lead agent in the the team?

Project Resource Connection 16 years, 10 months agoCool idea for a group… i also have some time left before I graduate but ive been attempting to learn more about the profession this summer by starting a temporary landscape business around town. Learning how to quote clients with a price for a variety of small installation jobs has helped me gain a better understanding of how much money is…[Read more]

things are picking up at the office – this thing is turning around. spirit/moral is pretty low – no raises or bonuses this year.
take the opportunity to go see great spaces/places and some of those great perspective sketches you do. you know as soon as you get that job you will never find the…[Read more]

I like to think that landscape issues are taken into consideration from project kickoff. If this is the case, a landscape architect should probably be involved from the beginning. Though I think it obviously depends on the role of the LA, which is as vast as the profession from urban planner through garden designer.

Did the people who were laid off have bad attitudes as well?
I think the point of ASLA’s survey was to help analyze this gap. Hence the questions regarding expected and actual skills and salary. I don’t think it addressed attitude per se. I agree that attitude can be a limiting factor for prospective employess, but at the same time I wonder if an…[Read more]

Berkeley is currently accredited as far as I can tell. Pomona is not on the DI top programs list, but since I am hearing positive things here I will definitely check it out. Anyone know anything about USC?
Also, it’s worth mentioning that since I don’t have any LA experience I would rather attend a hands-on heavy program rather than a more…[Read more]

I have sat in a meeting with clients (landscape architects) and a laptop and listen to them talk, and as they talked I have built the model (in Sketchup), then as they saw it next to a human figure and a vehicle they could change the scale of items in the model in real time, granted the models were gates, signage, monuments, walls, and giant urns,…[Read more]

I think I speak for many new grads when I say we hear lot’s of things and it gets darn difficult to discern what’s most important and most marketable.
I think ASLA’s recent survey attempts to address this knowledge/communication gap.

Wow, this has turned into quite the rigorous and thoughtful exchange of ideas, with great points being made on both sides. I’m definitely one that is guilty of quickly jumping on any bandwagon that tries to eliminate fertilizers and shipping food hundreds of miles when it can be grown locally instead. But through this discussion I see that this…[Read more]
