Design/build is about the only kind of ad I see out on the internet also (to April).

FWIW…in the Seattle area, residential/small commercial design/build is the only thing showing signs of life; those doing this type of work are the only ones displaying any sense of optimism. Most of the job posting that have been circulated to us are for small design/build firms. The larger, more prestigious firms….the sound of crickets.

Just the site…I wander over there every once in a while, always vowing never to revisit. The e-gos are out of control, kind of funny really.

The “economy to scale” is hard to fight in residential–especially in the less than stratospheric markets. Best to be design/build or partner up with skilled tradespeople.
If memory serves, wasn’t Tommy Church design/build? -

I used to admire those early guys too and assumed it was a universal type of market and that being skilled would get one “into it.” But looking back, and I prepared a lot of residential plans, the whole record was not as satisfying as I had imagined at the start. I didn’t mind that I needed bigger projects in the mix to make a living, but it was…[Read more]

Thanks everyone. I’ll work on this and come up with something better soon. As I said, I want to revise my whole portfolio, but, of course, I have to keep applying to firms as I do this, so some firms will get the less developed version.
A couple of questions on your suggestions:
– How many pages do you think I should devote to my thesis? I would…[Read more] -

Chris, I tried different pdf export settings including exporting the image as jpeg, bmp and tif files and opening them up on InDesign and than exporting to pdf from there. None of the options worked. I tinkered with the compression options got the same results. Interactive=poor quality and pdf print=good quality. At this point, could I just create…[Read more]

Thank you Blair, but the problem is actually once I convert the InDesign to pdf print vs pdf interactive. It’s not blurry at all when I use “print overview.” It only gets that way as soon as it is converted to pdf. Thank you for your help though!

A lot of those guys started from money. In fact, some of halprins earliest projects were his own home and friends.
there is really great residential work here in my area, but there is also a lot of really bad work, even despite the money. -

You are aware, perhaps, that having nice typeface and margins just so can only help presentations, but don’t have anything intrinsically to do with actual design?
So the big firms have standardization. Great. It seems like you wish to use their systems for yourself. There’s nothing wrong with good CRMs, project management, databases, and CAD…[Read more]
