‘natural’
i say it in quotes because i was taught never to use the word ‘natural’ because it means something different to everyone. You’re just as mean/opinionated/aggressive as me. -

That was quite possibly the rudest thing i have ever heard (even from myself). I AM a designer. Maybe im not some backyard-weekend-warrier, but I am a fine graphic designer, landscape designer, et cetera. I mean lets be serious, how did Robert Ross get drug into this mess? Im confused how listening to Jamie or you Mr. Anthony will determine my l…[Read more]

Designing backyards is awesome, better when the client wants to drop millions on them as some do…
Other than the non-design LA jobs (government, NGO, nonprofit):
Graphic design
App design seems to be a pretty popular alternative (and a lucrative one when done right).
Marketing
Publication
Education
TV/Movie (mostly rendering and set design) -

1. Align maps, title blocks, scales.
2. Be concise in the text – Have a paragraph as to why the topic interested you and compelling argument that it is a relevant to current conditions (it’s a thesis, not just a project so make the argument as to why its a thesis). “Inventory and analysis diagrams” would cover this page along with a short text on…[Read more] -

Thanks for the suggestions.
I’m still researching and I think something more CRM instead of a basic address book is needed. We need more detail than just basic contact info; who is a regular maintenance customer, who has spent over x amount of dollars with us and is therefore more lucrative and loyal. A way to tag them, pull up the tags quickly to…[Read more] -

I’m wonder how you actually conceptualize designs yourself if you insist on such detail all the time right off the bat.
Don’t you do bubble diagraming at all? It’s not a plaza yet, it’s a nebulous “gathering space” connected with “circulation” indicated by dashed lines and everything has great big arrows, right?Thinking about species specifics…[Read more]

I think what you are seeing is also a by product of schools no longer teaching drawing and rendering techniques. i know graduating with an urban planning degree i had one class in 4 years where i had the chance to draw anything, and what we were told was “the computer will to everything” what they didnt tell us is that you have to understand the…[Read more]

It is good to have an open mind, but also to realize that designing backyards is landscape architecture, just at a smaller scale.

Good argument. But I did not say anything of good/bad design. Experience has nothing to do with a passion for good design; experience should expand those obsessions, guide the development of your own style and focus of choice (urban/residential/commercial). Experience doesn’t beat anything out of you; it gives shape to your passion through the…[Read more]

opinions are called that for a reason. im an addict. yes i need a mac and helvetica (neue) because i like their effects. true, i lack real world experience, in some things. but that should not constitute my passion for good design. is that something that gets beaten out of you when you get experience? if so, count me out!! I care a lot abou…[Read more]

What’s up with the helvetica neue? I agree it’s the most readable, simplistic form of font, but that’s not to say there aren’t fonts worthy of use. Your forceful, repetitive reference ignites a rebellious side in not only myself, but I’m sure others. I’m sure your also a Mac obsessive who thinks PCs are completely worthless. Your criticism…[Read more]

Your maps are great and will definitely serve you well. And it’s awesome you’re getting feedback on this site (I kind of wish I would’ve done that sooner….. :-D)
1. The more borders, the more constricted one feels looking at the portfolio – drop them all together (even your maps). This will help create a cohesive, fluid look overall.
2. I would…[Read more] -

*PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING IS JUST AN OPINION
hate is a strong word reserved solely for papyrus and bad design. (not an opinion)
I think you may want to have a bit more hierarchy, and lose the colour boxes. Your maps are portrait, so i would still persuade you to use portrait layout. Also, no offense, but it feels a bit like a powerpoint p…[Read more] -

Take a look at the jpeg. I put this together this morning. I had to produce something quickly, because there was a firm that had already requested my portfolio. Hopefully the text boxes aren’t overwhelming. I used Times New Roman text. Not sure whether Alex hates that as well. I can always revise this, of course. I need to revise the rest of my…[Read more]

Agree and disagree with these steps. Different employers look at things differently.
AMEN to step 1, but don’t feel like you have to use helvetica neue (it’s great for text/descriptions, but you can make the title a snazzier font)
?? — Step 3: My way of going about things is to include text (don’t freak out! I’m not implying you put a 10 page…[Read more]
