I don’t disagree with that either. I was simply trying to understand why you, as an architect with an architectural education, would be so interested in “gaining Landscape Architecture Work Experience,” as if that would qualify you to be a PLA. It would be similar to me asking you how many seminars I should go to before I call myself an architect…[Read more]

OK, I’d like to return to my original question & rephrase it a bit:
Q: Does the CLARB Council Record break down Work Experience Categories like the LARE
categories as mentioned before in this Discussion? Those categories were:
- Landscape Architecture Desgin
- Planting Design / Planting Construction Drawings

I do to, but designing structures and designing the land are two different educational and professional disciplines. And from vast experience (I have always worked in architecture offices), Architects clearly do not have any idea how to do the latter.

Well, I guess that I just have a belief that the design of structures & the actual land with which they co-exist are not separate endeavours.

The bottom line is there is no single approach to please all of the people all of the time. Your profs are wrong to make such an absolute blanket statement, and I’ve had enough contacts and responses to prove it. Age/generation alone does not decide this issue – it’s one unto itself. Some people/firms are intensely anti-digital, some are playing…[Read more]

Prrof reading and having someone else proof read your correspondence is not a bad idea either. In this day of texting, people get into writing habits that are less than what would be the best representation of one’s self.
I agree that it is not a good idea to apply a standard operating proceedure to every LA firm. There are very old school p…[Read more] -

I was really confused by what you wrote, Jason, and was just about to ask about it. Thanks for clarifying. My question to JA still is why you’re concerned about this at all? It seems to me that there are other credentials more closely related to building architecture that would give you more of an advantage in the marketplace than trying to find a…[Read more]

wow, did I ever make some typos in there! It should state that any degree OTHER than a BLA, MLA or certain CLARB accredited BSLAs will not qualitfy you to take the LARE. You will need to go the other route of working under a LA for a decade before you would qualify for a license. The language is vague to allow for some flexibility, but the…[Read more]

This appears to be a very common question, that in its broad sense is really about digital vs hard copy or old school vs new school (not inferring age here). In my experience, I would send a hard copy, though sending both is not bad either. Touch point is key here. In addition, with a hard copy you have absolute quality control. i.e. how the co…[Read more]

In GA, the language is vague. As I mentioned, the Board says ‘equivalent’ degree. I have written them to clarify if my degree is equivalent. If it is, I may try to meet all other reqts, such as working for a LArch (in GA, it’s 18 mos w/out an MLA).

A BSArch is not considered an equivalent degree in my state.Almost any degree other than an BLA, MLA, or certain BSLAs or sometimes an ornamental horticulture degree will qualify you to sit for the LARE. Exceptions are indeed rare, and must be accompanied by substantial experience. In most cases, a BSArch is not a professional level degree that w…[Read more]

What kind of projects are you doing in Hong Kong? -

Wait, I’m really confused. You are an architect with a BS Arch(itecture) degree and you are concerned about gaining credentials so you can practice Landscape Architecture too? Without a BLA/MLA?

ny state has a 3yr (2yr in ny) rule that is more stringent than the neighboring states. CA, MA and FL (and maybe others) have challenging state specific sections (a state can require more sections) in their exam requirements.
I lost a few years worth of hrs in the 6-month rule change in IDP; every year I pay into that system aggravates me – it’s…[Read more]

I’m with Andrew, both. Email allows larger firms to pass on to multiple people in the office faster, it also allows them to pass on to their contacts. Hard copies can be kept on a “to be considered later” pile if they keep one (believe it or not some places keep a “ranked” pile around for months). It does depend on the firm, culture, and th…[Read more]

I’ve always found the most successful way is to send by email and then follow up with a phone call a day or two later. It shows you’re actually motivated and not just sending out mass applications to every firm.
