Success depends on three things.
First that land is being developed or re-developed.That is where the biggest problem is right now. That is likely to change, we just don’t know when.
The second is having a skill set that matches the needs of the people doing the development or re-development.
The third thing, and this is also a very di…[Read more] -

Robert thanks for the feedback. In studying the chiminea I’m thinking that part of the success in these having draw is related to the small front opening into the firebox. Do you think?

Its not going to bounce back in 4 years, or even 10 in my opinion. The game has changed and the profession needs to adapt and its going to take a while. The average LA student probably isnt going to find a sustainable career in traditional practice in the coming years. Nursing isn’t looking to good anymore either.
We just need to change the way…[Read more]

Well I don’t want just the positive, I want the truth, if it’s really hard finding work and you think it’s only going to get harder then I want to know that. If you think it’s going to bounce back and things will be easy in 4 years then I want to know that. I just want honest opinions and experiences.

The problem is that arch/la professors tend to guide students toward traditional career paths in la/arch and there just are not enough jobs/projects right now to support all of the new grads that want to practice design right out of school.
Recession seem to occur every 30 years and LAs get hit hard during these times. Be ready to weather the storms. -

Miles,
Its really a matter of getting the draw to start from there the heat carries the column of smoke up. We have a chiminea that is – by design intended to make smoke – and the “flew” is only 24 long. This carries the smoke away from everyone except on the windiest of days.
Good luck with your project.

I graduated in the spring of 2009, and did not find an industry job until fall 2011.
This doesn’t sound like a good career endeavor since we are adivising someone on career choices. During recessions, some professions do well while others dissolve. -

Nursing is a very good bet.

My point is, do you know what CEQR and NPDES are? These are legistlative driving forces behind employment of LA’s (with health benefits),
Please tell us what your point it all about? -
Michael Tracy replied to the topic Should I major in landscape architecture? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 14 years ago
To be honest I don’t know what they are, I’ll look them up but usually I like working with requirements and restrictions because it’s more of a challenge. In my CAD classes we had to design houses with restrictions but some some kids asked if they could just design what they wanted and my teacher let them. Those kids generally designed 8,000 sq…[Read more]

Michael, No-one says LA is going to be useless in 4-10 years. Where is that coming from?
My point is, do you know what CEQR and NPDES are? These are legistlative driving forces behind employment of LA’s (with health benefits), in addition to local zoning regulations. In my experience, if you do not have the patience to deal with these laws, i…[Read more] -

The thing with color calibration, profiling, and management is that it’s so complex that you can spend a lot of time and money for very subtle improvement. As far as displays, without getting to far into details of panel types and such, the only relatively cheap and reliable way to make sure yours is calibrated as well as it possibly can be is to…[Read more]

Mostly, these items don’t look too bad, and you have to remember the audience and what they will use to view. Mostly, on screen resolution is good enough to get your foot in the door. Then you whip out your full res (and in my case, huge) portfolio. Many prospective employers set a size cap to their e-mails (sometimes a little as 2megs) for…[Read more]

I’m going to have to at least partially disagree with Jason on this one. You cannot sufficiently compress a full portfolio for an email attachment and not have it look like crap. Why would you spend all the time, money, and effort to create a high-quality print version (unless it’s just your carry and not distribute version) and then turn aro…[Read more]

Yah my mom who’s a nurse said the job market goes up and down, first their was a overflow and nurses then they didn’t have enough nurses, back to overflow and then they need nursing instructors. So I’m hoping I can stay with this major and have good security and a decent amount of pay. I just haven’t heard that many LAs say good things about how…[Read more]

If smoke in the eyes is the issue, have the stack terminate higher than six feet. Unless wind carries it, smoke goes up : )

I graduated in the spring of 2009, and did not find an industry job until fall 2011. That was in the midst of the recession. If you enter school now, I suspect you will finish in a booming industry. Landscape architecture will have a much larger space at the table of any design/construction project in the future. We have a lot of new ideas and…[Read more]

The analytical thinking, technical, and communications skills typically learned in a design program are invaluable in the real world and I believe we need more people with this kind of training in the world.
I think this is an excellent point and I would say it is one of the most significant skills I developed as part of my design education. I…[Read more] - Load More
