Aside from the owner, I am the second person in terms of site planning in a nine person civil engineering office with three licensed surveyors, two licensed engineers, an EIT, and another person with 20+ years of experience doing civil plans …. and they let me work part time (my request) because they don’t want to lose me … I got my degree…[Read more]

First, I am not your boy. Second, you are the epitome of my argument in that you had to go to CHINA to find work.

Keith, my boy, you seem to be missing my point. Look elsewhere in the these blogs (the one dealing with someone looking at a a design drafting position) and see what other practicing professionals have to say about how to redefine, reposition and rebrand yourself to overcome or bypass the perceived stigma you think our profession has. I will…[Read more]

I strongly disagree, Craig.. Do a quick search, there are plenty of jobs in civil engineering, architecture, environmental sciences, and surveying,…..none of which landscape architects are qualified to do. Landscape architects cannot legally take a land plan or reclamation site from start to finish as civil engineers can, which is why we are…[Read more]

I think what I’m seeing is more a grief over the bad all over state of things. Schools of LA can’t very well say to students “Note, this is going to be sparse on results” or they couldn’t justify continuing to offer courses. They might need to ask themselves if there are some changes they can make or ask alumni how to best prepare students for a…[Read more]

Alrighty folks, I have had enough of the emotional hand-wringing here, the pity party for the paltry and some ill-informed commentaries. My turn to respond to all of those.
From bottom-to-top.
The planner position in Houston. Really read the announcement. Certainly, it pays a slightly better than pauper’s wages, but don’t forget the huge p…[Read more] -

i hope that’s a signing bonus, maybe we need agents to squeeze better fees from clients… Scott Boras for the LAs would be nice.

knew a welder in VA that did some amazing architectural work, craft skills and design skills are a great combo.

I understood it as overall unemployment – not employed in field of study. For grad school degree holders it’s more understandable, but for college grads one has to ask “does the curriculum encourage tunnel vision and specialized knowledge?” We had a studio course in architecture school for non-majors because deans from the other schools s…[Read more]

Reee-goddamn-diculous. I’m gonna go cry, then look into the local vocational school district for a career in welding….then cry some more.

There is an ad in the ASLA jobs site for a planner for Houston – the pay? $25,000…I think that is an insult.. We are loosing ground, us wage-earners..and the job requires an Masters degree….Ouch!

FYI, a ‘duh’ article in the Washington comPost:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/business/economy/new-study-shows-arch…
Study found that architecture and arts/humanities degrees have the highest unemployment rates. Nobody building anything = no jobs in architecture. Arts/Humanities degrees always have the highest unemployment rates…so that is…[Read more] -

i wouldnt consider go carting an ‘extreme sport’ by any stretch. maybe think about rock climbing, rafting, kayaking, skateboarding, paragliding, base jumping, hiking, mountaineering, camping, backpacking, skiing, mountain biking, road biking, bungee jumping, surfing, etc, etc.
I live in Aspen, CO–a mountain resort town. design workshop, edsa,…[Read more]

The law that passed DOES NOT allow for intertstate commerce with private heath insurance. If you ain’t got it, you have to buy it right from the the government “pool”, which is still not totally defined.

Have you tried to work in a civil engineer’s office as civil engineering staff rather than a specialist LA? We can bring a lot to the table in terms of skill set that is very well suited for local civil firms. They do more site planning than anything else. Their interns have more experience measuring vibrations on bridges, compaction from test…[Read more]

I have been slowly checking out Modo 501 and am thus far highly impressed with it as an alternative to 3dMax but without character animation and the addition of mudbox-like painting and sculpting facilities. Superbly intuitive interface that seems to have a number of similarities with Sketchup in the way modifiers such as scale, rotate and move…[Read more]

Basically I share the same concern. Yet maybe the title & training mixup of LA’s with allied professions could be part of the problem. We have tried to define subcategories in a big area of landscape design, with horticulture, LA, land planning etc. splintering a bunch of people concerned with the same thing. Yes, some are interested in learning…[Read more]

There is another trend….I don’t want to say “ominous” but certainly a challenge, and that is inside 4 year (and even 2 year) horticulture programs. “Way back” when I was starting out, horticulture and LA had a kind of solid dividing line, with more botanical science and maintenance business focus inside horticulture and more history, art, and…[Read more]

Do you have mountains or holes in the ground, holes in any flight paths over the site to allow for local flights and a stretch of water without predators, etc. for those sports? What are local safety laws and medical facilities or will you have to introduce them? How will you cover insurance costs and requirements? Finally, what can you pr…[Read more]
