I’ve seen QR codes in Japan for plant ID, presumably they use it for urban forestry purposes as well.

Here’s a link to Nancy Montgomery’s web site.. She’s a talented graphic artist from Portland Maine who’s done a lot of work for MaineDOT, NPS, and White Mountain National Forest. She brings a fresh approach to information display, incorporating photographs, historic documents, and a variety of other graphics. We worked with her on the in…[Read more]

Rather than the signs being the problem, I think its the content and quantity. We tend to over-sign things, thus my comment about getting a LEED point for putting in a sign next to every “eco-gutter,” no matter how small. They are everywhere…every project. Frankly, no one cares. You’ve see one, you seen them all according to the general public.…[Read more]

I was at Sitka National Historical Park a few weeks ago. They have a 1-mile “totem trail” that follows a historic path around a battlefield with a dozen or so totem poles. It was set up so you could use your cell phone to get a tour, hitting a new number at each pole and then learning what the totem represents, how old it was, etc. There was mi…[Read more]

The park plan has outdoor event space and small gathering spaces around the perimeter. It has a playgorund area and a trail network.

Understood, but if we’re talking about tens of millions of public dollars for the development of open space, be it infrastructural or recreational, there MUST be some opportunity for integration of public use-ie recreation, trails, places with shade, seating, etc. Par tof the value of this is at the very least so people will CARE about the place,…[Read more]

actually I just like to practice my insult chops..
It is knowledge of civics classes that seems to me most lacking in society today – Sandra Day O’Connor is spending her retirement on trying to ameliorate that lack, you have probably read.
I would add to that lack of knowledge or espect for ecology..

I think one of our biggest assets as a profession is the (supposed) ability to communicate with our drawings – especially hand drawings. I understand that not everyone’s hand sketching skills are at the top of their game, but it is critical that we deliver to our clients images that show our creativity and inspiration. Hand drawings are, in a s…[Read more]

I couldn’t get the “gallery” of photos to work on the website given earlier, but if you go to the “team” tag, they did have a landscape architectural firm involved (Pat already noted that), and a scrolling group of comments indicates there were benchmarks for its development and it wasn’t a hasty process. I’m curious that the renderings show it…[Read more]

As someone with low end hand drawing skills, I can tell you why I do not show much hand sketching to my clients. It is a simple answer. It is best to work with your best and most effective assetts rather than working with a lesser skill just because it is industry standard to do so.
I used to worry about it or was “afraid” as you say, but this…[Read more] -

One would hope that there was some criteria established for the design of the park prior to its being designed. If nothing else, the park department should have some type of comprehensive plan. Short of that, general criteria for “community park”, neighborhood park”, etc, … Did they hire a design firm to both establish the criteria and execute…[Read more]

A follow up question I have to this is whether or not 1/8″ thick Cor-Ten steel is adequate for a corner planter that measures 36″ H X 18″ W X 54″(exterior side), or should I go to a 3/16″ thickness?

Jason T. Radice replied to the topic New professial designation for liscensed LA's in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 14 years, 6 months ago
You would need to have a license to use just ASLA, non licensed would be Associate ASLA. If you were not a member of ASLA and had a license, you would then use your state’s preferred nomenclaiture, such as RLA or LLA, which is set in state law. Architects who are licensed and are not members of AIA generally use RA, and engineers use PE. But with…[Read more]

You bring up a good point…parks evoke different responses in people as to what they are. Perhaps because of the evolution of the word itself. The ‘merican version from dictionary.com:
an area of land, usually in a largely natural state, for the enjoyment of the public, having facilities for rest and recreation, often owned, set apart, and m…[Read more] - Load More
