I looked at what looks like a pretty promising laser rangefinder, TruPulse 360B Rangefinder on their website. Does anyone know anyone who uses this or has demoed it? If it does what it says and I can download points into cad, I’ll be all over it.

Instead of hiring a local firm that routinely deals with this environment, they hired a firm that is not familiar with the environment that they are working in – no knock on Geoffrey, just those that did not hire locally. Hiring a bigger firm from farther away is not in itself a bad thing. But if that firm gets into a portion of the project o…[Read more]

Okay, I don’t really know where this is, but I’ve got to believe there are some readily available resources for you to easily find this info. Looking at the photo, sure its a lot of grass…but that can’t be the native condition. What barrier island is this? I’m not familiar with MD’s barrier islands, but with a quick google search for ma…[Read more]

The “value of an idea” is so little that those generating them need to pay $150 in addition to their efforts to have them considered?
I guess I do not have a problem with using the egotistical segment of the design community as a fund raising vehicle as well as a cost saving way to get design done if it so prevalent. I am a big believer in h…[Read more] -

…what they are doing is waiting to see how much money they generate from the entry fee and after they have paid themselves, whatever is left over will be the prize money….if there’s any left.
the whole set up is strange…I woulldn’t touch it with an “eleven foot pole”! -

Thanks for the clarification. Little of this comes through in the competition announcement, in my opinion.
Why would this not be ‘what it seems’? Why the hidden source and agenda? Why ask for a $150 entry fee, then decline to reveal the prize amount? If the prize is related to the number of entrants then SAY IT.
Compare your call for entries to…[Read more] -

Some trees are “naturally” shaped like lollipops. You know, like Bradford Pears. I can’t tell what this tree is, though, so maybe you’re right.

Points well taken Ms. Olsen, although things aren’t what they always seem, even in Sonoma County California. The Core Project: Ideas Competition for Sebastopol, California is the making of a volunteer group of citizens who live and work in Sebastopol. It has been a very grassroots effort looking to find solutions to the very issues you hig…[Read more]

What is the necessity of the additional hardscape made by the granite? It does not look like something nice to walk on in the event that it is necessary because of vast amounts of pedestrians. It looks like it was done just to avoid maintaining plantings or mulch.
Can we all agree that all parking area tree plantings suck and it is only left to…[Read more] -

It looks great, thanks for sharing the pictures. I have started to see more and more like what you are showing below with the pavers. These seem to be used in place of tree grates. Much more attractive and less damaging to the trees.

That’s the thing about this competition. There is no “guaranteed” award – up the judges. Then, if they want, they can steal your work and hire the politically connected firm. Everything good and awesome about your competition they have stripped out.
Congrats, on that one, back then. That must have felt awesome! Very cool. It’d be fun to…[Read more] -

Here’s another option you might want to allow. It’s dry-laid Belgian block with what was supposed to be a 1″ gap between them. Joints are filled with granite fines, and I believe I specified 4″ of fines underneath. You get plenty of infiltration with this kind of detail. The trees were doing fine, but I really need to revisit this site as its…[Read more]

Yeah, we ended up with that narrow strip as the property line is to the left of the lot, and there was a setback, then of course the standard dimensions for the spaces and lanes. That was all there was room for. It also greens up a grade change rather than having a retaining wall. Any shrubs in a strip like that would be at risk of damage fr…[Read more]

If it was “lollipopped” it was likely done in the nursery.
