Both professions aren’t as sexy as they sound. Most of the work is administration and drafting work, most often of the design of other more senior members of your firm. If you have a genuine knack for design, I do believe that you will do more of it than others, but it still does not add up to much time. Most often, the big ideas are co…[Read more]

Plus, it’s a sellers market when it comes to the studenting business – schools are desperate for students because they make money off your federal loans, and then don’t care if you graduate or not, or what kind of job you get. UPenn accepts everyone who applies, so find a program that will NOT put you in debt – change states, if you can get…[Read more]

That is a fact. More importantly, that prognisis was developed prior to 2008. Clearly, they were totally wrong and based a ten year prognosis on very short term data taken at the height of a boom.
Landscape architecture is like the stock market. It has its ups and its downs. Some areas are more secure than others. Those that go up fast have a…[Read more] -

hee! funny, Henry..Actually cynicism, sarcasm and disrespect predate my birth in my family by at least two generations that I know of..It’s genetic, is my excuse!.
Sorry, Benjamin, but I seriously would spend two years drafting somewhere, and then decide. And I don’t mean drawing with a nice pencil, grades 6b to F, or with prismas..Learn to click…[Read more] -

The Occupational Outlook Handbook predicts a “much faster than average” growth of employment (+20% during the 2008-2018 decade), but I could use human feedback on that stat and what it really means.
Given how many L.A.s are out of work today, a +20% growth rate over a decade means that in 2018 there will still be far fewer employed LAs then there…[Read more]

WORK 14 years, 9 months agoThanks Brandon, long time no see. Here in China, I am the Senior Landscape Design Manager at the Venetian in Macau, China. Well, Cara, I singled out your response because, unlike Andrew and Henry’s, yours seemed mean-spirited. Theirs seemed rather playful. I will concede though, that I had not read the entire thread before I read yours and said to myself, “that crazy b!@#@.” Had I done that, I would have read the portion where William made completely idiotic and di…[Read more]

You WILL need a masters degree now to get an architecture license, so count on spending at the very least 5 years in architecture school. It is also a lot easier to get into an LA program with an architecture degree and come out with a MLA, as opposed to getting a 4 year (possibly 5) BLA degree and having to spend at the very minimum of 2 years, p…[Read more]

buddy, so little of what one ends up doing is ‘design’..If I were you, I would work for a firm in some kind of dog-level work for as long as you can. Both professions spend MUCH more time calculating curve dimensions, road profiles is a good example, or the tedium of making specifications work with your plans..the frustration of meeting clients…[Read more]

RA, I like the way you attack me, but leave Andrew and Henry’s responses alone. I’m sure your lone motive was to get me to respond. I’m simply stating the obvious here and some of you just don’t have the guts to say it. Some of you guys simply lack a backbone and can’t accept constructive criticism and harsh realities. Nope not ranting, but giving some difficult advice and truth. Failed LA? Lol. Okay sport, whateva you say! There is no reason why anyone in any business should not be allowed to enjoy aesthetics within their work place. Greed has nothing to do with that, as far as I am concerned. Excessive vanity is not a trait that I appreciate, but it still is not the same as greed.
Greed is when you exploit others for any reason, when you replace other values to g…[Read more] -

No, no one has these statistics. I’ve been looking at doing a master’s thesis related to the impact of the economic downturn on the profession, but there is so little in the way of reliable data that even designing a research proposal is a exercise in frustration.
The closest you could get to data that might give you a peek at what’s happened to…[Read more] -
