I was just on there, maybe they were replying to the posts. I just commented on the statistics they posted about completing each sections, I find it hard to believe that the average number of times it takes to pass E is less then 2. How many people do each of you know that took at least 3 attempts, 4 attempts and more?? C, yes, maybe, One fail…[Read more]

Single family homes probably built by an Apple owned developer on Apple land… for Apple employees to live in… corporate towns are nothing new… they’ve been around since the dawn of organized labor. You own the company, you build the housing and sell/rent to your employees, you own the grocery store where they buy their food, the gas station,…[Read more]

Ironically, it looks like Clarb decided to take down their discussion page on the LARE changes….
Maybe all the complaints were creating too much negative publicity. -

Yeah, I’m getting kind of tired of hearing how the building ‘looks like a space ship landed..’ and that’s supposed to be a good thing..see: LAM’s article last month on Holl and Van Valkenburgh’s Whitney Water Purification Facility, most of Ghery’s projects, and this.
In the last plan graphic in Jason’s link you can see that their neighbors to…[Read more] -

My grade school was a big circle (classrooms around the outside, sunken library in the middle). It was interesting to walk around because it was constantly revealing itself… you can never see around the bend, but it was horribly inefficient to move through. If you want to go from one side to the other you can’t walk a straight line to get there,…[Read more]

You have to love the idea of a peaceful park with four or five people relaxing in rural splendor while knowing that 12,000 people are in the building. I’m trying to grasp how that might work.
The only similar thing that I can equate this too is a footbal stadium where thousands of people are inside (OK, there is a difference between 12k and 70k).…[Read more] -

The arrogance can get to the point of being entertaining…like they are a character of themselves. Just so long as they are decent to you while working with them. Some can be downright nasty to work with. You cannot do anything right in their minds, even though you know far better than them when it comes to LA matters. You wouldn’t insist on ma…[Read more]

It’s no wonder why they had Joobs present to the Council instead of the designers. They need Apples tax contributions so bad that they’ll give Jobs anything to stay.
I didn’t share the link as a puff piece for Apple or Jobs (I’m a Windows person myself), but cause they do bring up one or two zoning and utility issues that I didn’t find anywhere…[Read more]

Here’s some Brits who think differently. They want to emulate Germany – strong Unions, strong social safety nets, great economy. -

Watch the video if you want to watch town council ask some of the dumbest questions on earth..seriously.
I like the overall concept, though I wonder if the community wouldn’t benefit more from a campus less self-contained..it sounds a little like Area 51, and although that’s what they may be going for theoretically, in practice I wonder if it…[Read more] -

I agree, Max, I took Mike Lin’s class years ago, and absolutley loved it..He liked to call me ‘Too Loose”, which I found amusing – I am too loose in drawing, and his class managed to give me the concentration to tighten up a bit..
But I agree, I had a terrific time in Mike Lin’s class, and got a lot out of it..
You may find some different o…[Read more] -

Planning Profession and Landscape Architecture 14 years, 9 months agoHello!
Just wanted to see how many planners-turned-LAs there are. I know there is a significant amount of shared history and values, but the technical skill set of LAs set them apart. I’m considering doing the switch myself, and plan on slowly picking up the skills part-time. Are there many who have done this? Any advice?

Wow, that was informative! Sounds like you’ve had direct involvement with the planning of a lot of these places. You use some very British terms. Could you please explain a few of them? I watched a lot of British sitcoms and Monty Python growing up, but these are unfamiliar! Kettling? Barracking? Also, your use of “dear” is unusual. You see…[Read more]

These riots happened shortly after the kids broke up for the school holidays and under 16’s of afro-caribbean origin did most of the damage. Most of these sought props for their preferred lifestyle from x-box units to trainers and tops. Almost all else, including fires, was the standard trashing that follows illegitimate activity including the b…[Read more]
