Agreed on the roof. That was there when I came on the project. headed to Historic District Commission literally right now to see if we get approved on the fence. I stuck with the metal. It’s a pretty abusive urban environment. I will post the results along with some elevations! -Miles

On a related note, I had a little laugh when I read that ad for a landscape architect in Abu Dhabi on the board here. It states that they want a female European. Reminded me of how different labor laws are in some places. You can’t discriminate like that on craigslist…at least the US craiglists!

And if we’re nitpicking, I don’t think that blue standing seam metal roofing works AT ALL! They probably paid a lot of money for it too! Should have gone with copper or a more muted color.

This company has some great historic cast iron pieces, since they’ve been around since these pieces were contemporary!

Got to agree about the wood picket fencing. Cast iron works better on buildings with more somber colors, brick, stone masonry. Its for more dense urban environments where you need a material th…[Read more] -

The key word here is ‘unstable’ environment for business – everyone is FEELING uncertain, Congress is so incredibly volatile and antagonisitc that people just don’t know what to expect, as you say. But my intuition is that without this FEELING of volatility we’d be recovering pretty well – more cautiously, but still recovering.
I suspect, from…[Read more] -

Yes! We are thinking seriously about entering. We have a planner friend from New Mexico we’d like to bring in on it. I wonder about getting a team together representing most or all of the western regions…anyone interested? There’s no money in it, but the entry fee is only $45 I think…

If I were you, I wouldn’t worry about something that hasn’t happened, and I certainly wouldn’t yell fire in a crowded theater. And why analyze the numbers? What the heck can you do about it anyways? Of course, you should be prepared, but don’t suddenly start saving 100% of your income just because you hear someone else yell fire. I think just b…[Read more]

Good News Les and others interested in authentic cast iron fencing and gates,
Some of the Victorian era cast iron fence and gate designs that were lost are now available again in the UK at http://www.heritagecastiron.com and in the US at http://www.heritagecastironusa.com . These are historically accurate reproductions. Additionally, these products have eas…[Read more] -

Cool, Tanya! Thanks! Looks like they want something a little more complex than my simplistic, “just don’t irrigate and see what happens” ideas..

Just announced this morning. Need I say more with regards to fed loans? THIS is what I meant (and it is both parties).
They are now going to make certain graduate loans payable while you are still taking classes. Nothing like changing the rules mid-stream. If the private sector tried this, there would be lawsuits flying from breach of contract.…[Read more] -

Start using a Mac computer and suddenly everything fall on your lap with ease!! Money will grow on trees in your yard.
I don’t know why I’m doing this. You said you have some experience, but your work reads like a student portfolio. Put those fancy, fantasy, imaginary plans to bed, permanently. It might be nice graphics, so show only two sets…[Read more] -
ida replied to the topic Does anyone use Rhino for Landscape design? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 14 years, 9 months ago
I’ve used Rhino for 2 years professionally. It’s like a dumbed down version of Autocad yet it’s like Sketchup on steroids, so it’s especially useful in the concept stage. The problem with Rhino is that it is hardly used in landscape and it’s a pain to convert the model to Sketchup or import a SkU model, but I think if more firms adopt it, it will…[Read more]

I just can’t see failure as a badge of honor like you do — maybe if it was free….? I really wonder how much the exam cost back when you took it (and how much hotels cost in Arizona). To go on minimal sleep and frayed nerves with a new baby, I would be wasting:
$380 exam
$75 reg fee
$150 minimum for a San Francisco hotel room
$100 gas ro…[Read more] -

Changes, especially taking something as complex as the LARE, and updating it, are difficult. In the transition there are definitely people who are going to be impacted. However, if you are one of those people I hope you put the goal of registration first for yourself and press forward. My understanding is if you aren’t able to pass a section of…[Read more]
