If you have 4-5 years experience, do you really need to be an intern. Most internships are no pay.

No I believe experience is vitally important, and I’m eclipsing 5 years of it. It’s simply Minnesota’s draconian rules about how it is obtained. I’ve worked on some very cool projects, managed/led some of them, worked with some very talented architects, learned a lot about grading, drainage, and HSW from our engineers, presented in front of c…[Read more]

Requirements to hire a landscape architect is a double edged sword. The initial reaction is that it gets us work because we are in an allegedly exclusive club. The follow up is that the public sees the hundreds of commercial minimal standard and poorly executed designs “by landscape architects”. Granted, this work is not done by the best…[Read more] -

3ds max + landscape architecture 15 years agoHi Hefti,
you can find some examples at my DA Gallery 3D Jobs folder. Most of the recent works are produced with 3D vegetation, a combination of pre-made models, self-models used via proxies and rendered with MentalRay or Vray. Hopefully, they can give some idea.

That’s what you call getting experience and paying them with intern salary! Those are the firms you stay away from on long term basis.
For me, the South Carolina Planner job is worst! The only person able to fit in that candidate description lives in someone’s imagination. I showed a few co-workers and everyone laughed. -

I guess it remains a “buyer’s market” for employers. Ditto on the crazy.

Thats crazy.
I’ve seen a number of ads looking for ‘entry levels’ with 1-3 years which is hard enough in this econmy, but five…ridiculous. -

So, you think passing the exam alone SHOULD be adequate for licensure?
Or do you think experience is important? More or less than education and passing the actual exam?

I like how you clearly state, ‘before I got my stamp, I was a landscape architect..’ end of conversation?
Now you’re an RLA. I see a discernable difference.
About the code requirement– Have you ever thought that the code requirement actually incentivizes minimum standards over the value of good design? One way to look at it may be that p…[Read more] -

I agree completely with RFox on the dilution of the word ‘architect.’
I’m pretty sure I can call myself an ‘architect’ if I want without penalty. I choose not to, but there are hordes of job listings and titles in the software industry for ‘architects.’ Architect is a pretty broad term. Landscape Architect denotes a specific set of…[Read more] -

In casual conversation if people with an LA degree who practice in the field say they are a Landscape Architect, I don’t find harm in it.
If you have the degree, and you work in the field…okay, you’re an LA, if you are registered, you’re an RLA. Bottomline, if you’re not an RLA you can’t legally get things done. Good, that’s how it ought to…[Read more] -

I’d agree, I really like the layout:
Specifically:
biography button – too busy — either a gray submenu or orange like [click to enter gallery] btn (consistent)
love the napkins – don’t like the gallery, not functional -hard to nav, hard to read
Awesome layout, great intro (though slow), great logo, font, etc.

The strategy that has worked well for me is the random drop-in visit, with your resume on hand, a printed portfolio if you have one and a business card that has your contact info and website if you have one. It has the potential to back fire if they are uber-busy, but I think that if you can keep the interaction brief, shake hands and make eye…[Read more]

Thanks for the ideas everyone. I like the saddle-stitch concept, since binding can be costly. Jason your double-sided brochure idea is great, I assume you need a relatively thick paper to prevent being able to see color shades through it? I think I’m leaning in the brochure direction, but I figure there’s no harm in throwing in a cd or min…[Read more]

There also needs to be a distinction between the RLA designation and passing the exam. Passing the exam does not instantly make one an RLA, as in my case. I’ve passed all of the exams but because I work for an architecture firm, and not directly under an RLA, I need to go to extra lengths to fulfill the experience requirement.
Believe me, al…[Read more] -

80-90% of the population has no idea what landscape architecture is let alone have the ability distinguish between an RLA and an ULAWITALDUTPTE (Unregistered Landscape Architect Who Is Tecnically A Landscape Designer Until They Pass The Exam).

MauiBob,
I just don’t see how it would really effect RLA’s. I’m guessing at this percentage, but I think it’s fair to say that 80-90% (or even more) of the general population doesn’t even know the difference between the two. The RLA’s, the landscape designers, the closely related professionals, and the firms do know the difference. They’re the…[Read more] - Load More
