Claudia, I think your question is an excellent one and I hope you get some more responses; I have wondered the same thing, as it seems there is somewhat of an uneven playing field.
While attempts at education are noble, in the end, regulatory requirements that necessitate a more widespread need for our services are what are most likely to have a…[Read more]

Something I forgot – as far as GIS goes, you can order CDs or download a trial copy of ArcGIS for free. I believe it’s good for 60 days. Plenty of time to go through tutorials. The manual can also be DL’ed as a PDF (or it might be included – it’s been so long, I forget).

This thread has sort of died, so maybe I wasn’t clear in what I was asking for here. I understand that most states have some form of a practice or title act in place. That is not what I was asking about. I am wondering if, on the local level, municipalities (or counties) require a licensed landscape architect’s stamp on commercial projects, an…[Read more]

From where I stand, Strike One (“I’m young”) is working in your favor. I’ve found the opposite to be true, and on more than one occasion, I’ve been told, “Actually, we’re looking for someone with less experience.” I mean – how thinly veiled is that? Look through the ASLA Job Finder and count how few firms want anyone with more than 3 years of…[Read more]

I survived on contract work for the last eight months working for a single firm from 20-60hrs/wk on a single large project. The small firm (3 people) needed the manpower but didn’t want to commit to a full time employee. By offering myself as a contractor I was able to keep my skills fresh and get some experience in the field (just graduated w/MLA…[Read more]

Originally I never brought up any race issue! The “bike thief” tv segment was a prime example of what our society is thinking. What are you boys talking about? You two landscape boys (Craig and Andrew) are way off base. Get back to your designs or open up a pizza parlor together. Craig and Andy’s Pizza has a nice ring to it.

Married filing jointly today for the twentieth time, actually. I’m not sure what I need an excuse for. I am pretty open to chiming in with my honest opinions even on controvercial subjects such as this one. I said that I am a white male without a last name that indicates religion or cultural origin and I’m married. I’m your stereotype…[Read more]

Excellent post Barbara. The most constructive post on this thread by far. And I think it’s advice that everyone in the profession can heed, whether you’re female, male, gay, straight, black, white, extrovert, introvert, tall, short, southern, northern, rich, poor, etc. Another poster on here made the point that none of us are truly ‘pure…[Read more]

Forget about it, BZ Girl!! Women shouldn’t be working in the A&E industry anyway. Leave it for the men’s club only. Females be regulated to only be employed as nurses, doctors, social workers, secretary, teachers or just stay home to cook, clean and care for the kids.
Oops…I forgot to add Librarians and Dancers on the women’s only occupation…[Read more] -

The use of programs like DynaSCAPE and Vectorworks offers the user the ability to do purpose built design intended for landscapes. Vectorworks Landmark is actually like taking AutoCAD, a landscape plugin, Photoshop and SketchUp and putting it all together in one program. The objects you design with have intelligence, and hybrid representation, and…[Read more]

Right now I’d take any contract job for as few hours as the business owner wants.
Having been laid off since November of ’08, I know there is no full-time job in my short-term future, due to my age and experience. I see my future – if I indeed have a future in LA, which I’m beginning to doubt – as a gradual climb back via contract work, which…[Read more] -

I can’t add much, but I agree with what the others have said – AutoCAD, PhotoShop, Sketchup, and ArcGIS. As far as a BIM software for landscape architecture, right now what’s recommended is Autodesk Civil 3D. But the same terrain models can be created with regular AutoCAD, Autodesk Land Desktop, or Eagle Point software (Formerly known to us o…[Read more]

I just picked up extra part time hours at a local office in addition to my regular job which has been fluctuating from 25-40 hours/week.
I know that another interior designer in town is working at three different architecture offices averaging a total of 40-60 hours a week.
From what I hear in my area work is definitely picking up–whether t…[Read more] - Load More
