It is nice to see that we are all open minded and don’t stereotype.

In all seriousness if you have no strong ties here any time you get the opportunity to experience other cultures that are different go for it ….also it can only suck if you apply a narrowly focus mind set.

I haven’t read through everything else but I’m sort of in the same situation as you. I haven’t taken Mike Lin’s workshop but I attended a workshop put on by graphicsteacher.com last month and will be attending another one this weekend.
What it comes down to is, what is it worth to you? I know the classes are expensive but for me, they are to…[Read more] -

Matt – I agree with everything you said.
The speed gained from the Lin “tricks” is what helped me the most, which made me practice more, which made me better. I agree with some of the others that you can also do this on your own, but will you? For me I needed the environment to push me. -

I think having kids and an unstable job , or no helpful partner, is a sign of lack of planning, recklessness, and lack of interest in your childrens well-being, therefore selfishness, that I do not think is very noble. People with kids can’t make friends, so they need to reproduce themselves, and then leave the kids at home like dogs, until they…[Read more]

in terms of job protection (i.e. not being laid off), i feel like the ‘married with kids’ crowd have an upper hand, at least in offices that claim to be ‘family friendly.’ I can relate to maui bob’s experience though, in that the ‘married with kids’ coworkers are the last ones in the office in the morning, first ones out in the afternoon, and…[Read more]

HAHAHHAHA, if it just ‘sounds’ to you Maui Bob, its evident you’ve never attended. I’ve been to his San Fran and Manhattan, KS workshops and TA’ed for him in San Fran as well. The workshop is a wonderful experience and you’ll learn more in two weeks than you can imagine. Also, Brian, Mike’s son now helps teach the workshop and brings un…[Read more]

Once again, horrible post by Maui Bob. Like I said, its obvious you’ve never been. Mike DOES NOT teach one single graphic style. When I attended, we had people that learned to draw photorealistic drawings, as well as others who learned ‘cartooning’ type drawings. Both were beautiful. Mike LIN teaches you how to use different techniques that…[Read more]

Anwwer to your fair and honest question.
I never did follow-through on the “are you working or not” thread and, as, you state here, “pushed it along”.
I am not looking to write a book, just seeking a variety of opinion on a complicated and difficult choice and crossroads to take.
Thank you for calling me out on this one.

I’m in agreement with several people’s response – hand graphics are VERY important. Hand graphics show how you think and express process and individuality. In interviews, I go immediately to the hand graphics in someone’s portfolio (and I always ask if it is their work). You will learn so much in an office about rendering style, color se…[Read more]

Just how much random opinion is going to help you out? You had another thread that you pushed along that was supposed to be a survey and we never saw the result of that data you collected. Now you are pushing this.
Are you looking to work in China, or writing a book? (honest question) -

I agree, completely.
Deryn, you may also want to look into local community colleges and/or art centers in your community, they usually have art classes which are just as relevant to brain-hand-paper as any Lin course… and they will be cheaper.
Then, youtube it up! -

1.) How important are hand graphics?
It is a diverse profession – many parts of it do not have high value for hand graphics and many offices use other presentation strategies that no longer require a need for a high skill in hand graphics. However, in a limited job market, limiting your opportunities might not be a good idea.
I do not have good…[Read more] -

While I respect everyone’s opinions…you can’t convince me the workshop at around $245+ per day plus cost of own food is worth it. All the students that come out of the workshop all possess the same graphic style shown in the book. Nothing worse than cookie cutter style, especially the plan view graphics of trees and shrubs.
While graphics is…[Read more] -

I have taken the course, I did so when I was an undergrad and felt that it was WELL WORTH IT. If you truly can’t afford it, at least buy the book and take whatever you can when the money is there.
