Rainwater harvesting system design and installation needs experience and training. Systems are designed to occupy minimum space especially in your garden. For this purpose, underground tanks are used. The pipe system is connected to the intended points of use. Pressurizing and pressure maintaining elements in the systems allow you to have constant…[Read more]

Ha! I like what Maui Bob says also – he is the only one who said, life is happening while you are disgruntled, so make sure you are enjoying it – when you are fifty, you will still be working, etc..
Thanks maui Bob! You live up to your name! I am geussing that perhaps you are just a very optimistic Lutheran living in Minnesota, and looking on…[Read more] -

Thank you for the input! I appreciate the advice about the MBA, but I don’t think it would work for me, as the primary reason I would like to go back for my masters (and eventually a doctorate) would be to go the academia route. I haven’t really felt passionate about private practice since I graduated in 2007, but I suppose that could have s…[Read more]

thanks mauibob! i fully acknowledge that my disgruntled attitude is discoloring my perception of why they hired this new guy. At this point, i probably wouldn’t care WHY they hired him. Just the fact that they hired him, fully knowing that the majority of the firm members- lowly peons AND principals- were against it, totally chaps my rear. It just…[Read more]

I agree with Jay. Pursue an MBA, it will open up more opportunities beyond the construction industry. Although I love being a LA / Planner, if I had a chance to do it all over again, I would go into Business Finance with some international studies. Which by the way was my second choice behind a degree in landscape architecture. Master’s in…[Read more]

Aloha!
So I take it that you’re on salary and not hourly paid? Maybe you should do a numbers comparison and ask if you can go hourly if its in your advantage. Doing all the overtime work brings in a larger bi-weekly check, right?
Anyway, you stay on the job and actively pursue another position. It also depends on your marital status. Easier to…[Read more] -

Jessi,
If you are still open to other options, maybe look into an MBA with a focus in sustainability. That will substantially increase the range of jobs availbile to you when you get out of school, some firms might find an MBA more attractive than an MLA. I don’t feel like we gain much understanding of the economic side of sustainability in design…[Read more] -

If you decide to got the MLA route, make sure you don’t end up in a combined program, rather, find a program that is not studio focused and will allow you to research what you want. If not, you will be wasting your time repeating much of your BLA studios and stuff. That was the mistake I made. I had an article about it in the “critic at large”…[Read more]

Situatioal rather than Utopian or necessary.
It is communication no matter what media is used. Most designers use a multi-faceted approach to communication rather than leaning on one particular media or method. We each have different ways of communicating and then there are those to whom we are communicating to. Know your abilities, know your…[Read more] -

I definitely agree with Nick…get that file size down. Ensure that your pdfs are flattened. If need be, save as a .jpg, then convert back to pdf. This should greatly reduce file size. One thing on the portfolio, I think maybe you could eliminate some of the text describing each project and just let the project speak for itself. Leave in key…[Read more]

I would definitely downsize the file size, 82MB is huge. From personal experience I have received “return to sender” emails from a portfolio that was only 8MB. I am having trouble downloading this file and I’m on a high-speed connection. My advice would be to post it on a portfolio, photo album website like Behance Network…[Read more]

Andrew,
You can solve the “thin stone” issue by adhering the stone to concrete– even in “dry lay” solutions, this can work if you get the process right. Too many geeky discussions about it, but we have done it.

I have an (unpublished) paper sitting around that measured how the general public (non-design educated) are able to react to and understand images produced from 3D models at different levels of detail. It also measured their acceptance/rejection of specific elements in the image.
Results showed that there was little to no advantage between…[Read more] -

So many portfolio layouts I see seem so unnecessarily confusing.
When I see a portfolio/project layout that is difficult to understand I question whether the designer had a clear direction and understanding of what they were doing as well. It also seems that 99% of the portfolios I look at it my spare time are loaded with digital graphics, but…[Read more] -
