Andrew,
I agree with your principles but not this detail. A landscape does not need to be either permanent or natural of course… it just needs to be the landscape it was intended to be…for more than 15 minutes. For me, every project is approached as though it is brand new, yet to design a landscape that cannot be mowed, pruned, weeded,…[Read more]

There always seems to be an expectation that a landscape is (1.) permanent and (2.) natural. This is not the case. Maintenance, human needs, and integration with nature are criteria that good design would address to the degree warranted by the project. There should never be an assumption of criteria. Good design starts by fleshing out the criteria…[Read more]

Dominic,
Thanks for reporting this. Could you take a screenshot of the error message, so I can see what you are experiencing? Also, does it occur on all the job links you click?
Thanks!

Maybe you could track the global ‘seeding’ of ideas by finding out which landscape architects are being studied in different universities across the globe. You could ask some of the Land8 members from other countries who they studied…???
You could use an application like ‘social graph’ (you can download a version of it on FB) to visually map the…[Read more] -

Well, one I can highly recommend is actually a compilation of many different authors pieced together from books and papers. It is aptly titled “Theory in Landscape Architecure” edited by Simon Swaffield. It has an eclectic mix of authors from different times/eras , and while I don’t particularly care for many of the selections, it gives you a nice…[Read more]

Perhaps the question was intended to just flesh out the philosophical, but I notice no one has mentioned “maintainability.”
Is design “good” if it pleases the mind but cannot be maintained in the real world? Or cannot be maintained given the resources available to maintain it? Is a design good if it doesn’t function? What is “function”? Over what…[Read more] -

I really like this last reply Thomas, as well as your first.
I really do take notice when a design or sketch of mine “feels off.” I try to really focus on what is making me feel that way, and brainstorm/sketch new ideas until I arrive at a solution that I feel confident in. It’s very important, as Vanessa said, for the space to feel very natural…[Read more]

What do you consider fast approaching retirement age. You may not have notice but it has cropped up cropped up to 70 years. I’ve seen it with my parents and their generation, working past the the normal retirement age of 65 years.. So, anyone who is qualified and experienced ought to be considered first and foremost.

your analysis is a joke, get of Fox News & company and look elsewhere. The rich are getting richer and they want to keep it just the way it is, Healthcare, Insurance companies are fighting tooth and nail to make everyone eligible for healthcare, why because it will drive the cost down if everyone is covered.
To get back to this discussion, Who…[Read more] -

One word: Beauty. Beauty is synonymous with Quality.
If your process is beautiful, your design will be beautiful. If your design is beautiful and the execution of your design is beautiful, the built environment will be beautiful.
I constantly ask myself, or rather I’m constantly aware of, beauty. If you feel disharmony, listen to yourself and…[Read more]

Hey Andrew,
That is really great that you are putting up these opportunities. Anything helps right now. I was wondering though why I am not able to click into the job postings. Is this something you’re still working on or is it something with my computer? Thanks and keep up the great work.
