My advice:
If you love design, find a couple of good contractors you can send work to on a regular basis. They will (or should) pay you a commission or referal fee for the work you refer to them. They will in turn send you work, some of which they will pay you for directly. Probably a little at first, then more as your relationship builds. You can remain focused on design and architecture and your skills will grow. No to mention you will be operating legally.

Having been in residential design / build for 15 years and licensed for around 12 of those years, I can tell you contracting takes a very different focus and mind set. I still have trouble transitioning. Over the last three years I have done what I described above and I’m so much happier in my work.
