Heather Smith replied to the topic These young kids today … in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 13 years, 11 months ago
Well I am in a funny position…I went back to school as a non-traditional student so am not a young kid but am a recent graduate…32 at the time. The traditional students I was in were anything but self involved. One class mate in particular pretty much worked her way through college in the universities kitchen…some weeks 40+ hours…and still…[Read more]

I have no arguments…just that I hope the positive people are right. We live in an economy driven by two universities whose budgets are getting whacked to hell. It makes us nervous and seems to be getting worse. I imagine recovery will depend on where you live.

Andrew,
UI is dropping BLA accreditation for a forced continuation into the Masters. Glad I went through when I did! -

Thanks for the warning! It has just reinforced what my husband and I believe. I think it is very tempting for recent graduates to believe that if they can’t grow professionally through employment to stay in the stability that school has to offer with a masters program. I haven’t been doing much with my BLA…concentrating on our adorable…[Read more]

This whole thing seems weird to me. Orphans gaining work experience and a petting zoo. It sounds like putting someone is trying to put window dressings on something ugly here. If something is philanthropic so be it…but educating them for the “real world”?
Off of that little tangent…my first thought was of course cultural relevance but since…[Read more] -

Had to log in just to say I think that winning design is hideous. I keep looking at it wondering how many bikers will fly over their handle bars and then when I read people could move them??? Wuh? Those rocks look incredibly out of place.

AR,
Have you thought of starting your own design/build? I am not sure what state you live in and how the economy is. We started out with fliers around town when reality struck…and have actually been able to survive!

Thinking more about this throughout the day. I think the thing that bothers me is that our education does not require an internship (at least our our uni) but licensing essentially requires one. For recent graduates…there aren’t even free internships available. If this practical experience is so worth it why don’t universities require…[Read more]

So you think the entire point of CLARB is to minimize competition? Interesting…. I thought it was to ensure a minimum set of skills for a practicing LA…. If a student graduates from a BLA program why shouldn’t they be able to take the test? If the graduate wants to take the money and time to advance themselves professionally that way why…[Read more]

Hey Thomas,
I think the point is not just that he can’t get reciprocity but that others also have no way of moving forward professionally. I would like to know if ASLA or CLARB have thought about this issue yet…what happens when people have no way of even being hired…down the road engineers and architects will be more then happy to pick up…[Read more]

Well…getting this off your chest do you feel better? I haven’t sat for them yet but my husband has…and passed them…some on the first try, one second, and one third! I think our university has a great grading and drainage class(I can say this after crying in it! haha)…but I am not sure what complaining about it will do. I think it is…[Read more]
