Personally, I would rather see it opened up to other render engines as well, partially because I use a different one than 3DS now, and also because it would be a good way for people unfamiliar with the strengths of different programs to see what they can do.

Not a bad question to ask at all.  The easiest way is to select an item with the black arrow key [or hit spacebar].
