Here is some pics from the project I described below- this was from 3 months ago and is coming along nicely. Note the re-used granite that we incorporated from existing curbs on the street. The sidewalk is alternating concrete broom finish and shell agreggate wash.

  • Thanks, Veenu!

  • Alland,

Something I can think of right now are,
    Pavement Cross sections, look for
    -thickness of concrete
    -proper placement of filter fabric
    -water proofing etc

    Stairs
-Riser thread heights or riser tread combined dimensions
-Handrail height, end handrail wrap up

Gaurdrails- spacing between rails, height, minimum requirement of gaurd…[Read more]

  • any idea what may be some of the flaws in the construction cross sections?
    steps, hardscaping, retaining walls, etc?

  • Great, thanks for the help!

I think I’m going to buy the LaGro book to start with and try to get the other ones through interlibrary loan (which never even occurred to me at first).

I would eventually like to buy all of them, but that’s almost $600 for all the books (used), exam fee, and study guides, so that’ll have to wait.

  • The test had questions from all four books.  I think the Site Analysis by LaGro would be the most important followed by the Booth and Russ books.  I suggest you read them all though if you are serious about passing the exam.  They are great books to have in your library for referencing throughout your career so make the investment if you can. Als…[Read more]

  • Jessica, you should be able to get all these books at your local library through interlibrary loan.

  • Jessica,

I have Site Analysis, and Site Planning & Design Handbook.  I read both of them, but only skimmed the Site Planning book.  Definitely read Site Analysis and get the PPI study material, and maybe the CLARB practice test.  That is what got me to pass this time.

  • As McHarg, Carson and colleagues set the sustainability movement in motion is there any discussion on chaos theory which may be a contemporary building block to add to McHarg’s shoulders?

  • Are we really landscape architects/ designers? Are we not philosophers, psychologists, subversive thinkers and all connecting with an unknown place – jumping not knowing where we might land and sometimes failing? Who knows where he/she is going? Chase Teddy Roosevelt’s lecture to the Sorbonne in 1910!

Thanks Tim and Cynthia. Next webinar will really get into strategic thinking about perspectives and drawing composition – my favorites! I’ll cook up some more video clips and hopefully control the camera focus a bit more than in last night’s program.

  • Webinar was really great – nice mix of refresher and new info. So helpful to keep up to date on materials and processes and see through Jim’s crystal ball into the future.

  • What does everyone think about green roofs in the desert? Specifically the Mojave Desert? Given how much energy costs these days, would they not be beneficial? Or would the cost of having to irrigate them (which you would have to in the desert) be worth it?

  • What is the grade and the largest amount of water you are dealing with? The planter needs to be designed to handle whatever nature throws at you.  You can retrofit the drain like Chris said to become the overflow at the down end of your planter. If you have a lot of slope, check dams can hold the water and pool it to infiltrate fully. Then the…[Read more]
