You probably don’t get it because you are already licensed….here is the part in question……keep scrolling…..

The deadline to purchase a Redline Review from the June 2010 Graphic Administration is Tuesday, September 7. CLARB recently sent information via email to candidates on how…[Read more]

Did you notice that this discussion is quoted in CLARB’s LARE Candidate Connection to sell the redline review? (Andrew’s comments)

well – WHAT was the drafting error??? I can’t believe you offered a teaser like that without expanding on the subject for all of us graphic-section takers!!! ha!

Andrew, you hit it on the head when you said that you ‘project’ entire personalities on people based on the way they post. Of course all human interaction is based on just that – projection…..
You are talking about accurately conveying your idea-arguement-supposition-suggestion AND your attitude about that subject AND your general attitude about…[Read more] -

There is nothing pompous or egotistical about wanting to be a better writer.
I disagree, though, that general writing skills are declining. I think they are probably improving – read the 40 under 40 series from the New Yorker or any number of the millions upon millions of new books being published each year in the US. Readership has skyrocketed…[Read more]

…and I don’t mind labels…I personally think they’re kind of interesting and I like the funny ones….I like personal expression, I don’t like blandness.
I think the conflict for me is that I deeply believe in a society where vastly different views can be expressed openly – yes, I agree that if I am going to publicly express my views that I…[Read more] -

My first question is – if you already have a degree why not go right into an MLA program? At least at my alma mater, people with other degrees put in a total of 3.5-4 years for a master’s…just food for thought.
People on this post are (understandably in this economy) suggesting a pragmatic approach to your education – training in specific…[Read more]

I agree and its a lesson I have to keep learning over and over again – principles / owners / managers / partners don’t really like being told how to run their business even when they ask employees their opinion. Corporate culture, once entrenched just does not change. It might help to chant ‘Bend like the reed, bend like the reed.’

What would really be a good idea is combining a firm and a school. Ok ok I’m enamored of the Taliesin idea, but wouldn’t that be a great solution to the cost of higher education? It would be a much more refined skill set than community college / votech and if your state requires 10 years of experience w/o degree, then you would only be putting in…[Read more]

My experience is with small firms – between 6 and 15 employees – as an employee and observer, not an owner.
Job descriptions seem to magically describe someone the owner has met and liked. In a small firm everyone does a little bit of everything, so official job descriptions aren’t very official and don’t appear to be the basis for wage – time…[Read more]

I know a great LA that never got a degree – came out of engineering, worked in the field for 10 years, easily passed the LARE, became a partner by her late 30’s, so it can be done.
What about a class at a time? I got the impression you only have about a year left??? I know tuitions are ghastly right now. -

Speaking of which – Andrew, have you ever written a business plan for a landscape architecture firm? Business plan examples from other industries don’t seem to fit the bill….
Interesting idea – efficiency is related to office/corporate culture, which of course also sets the value of any given task – monetary and intangible values.

I know this isn’t exactly what you mean, but your question got ME to thinking…..What does efficiency mean to you? Does it mean getting more work done in your 8 hours? Does it mean getting more ‘product’ out there faster? Not to utterly diverge from your topic, but I mean this seriously. I think there are a number of kinds of efficiency. And…[Read more]

Especially with their new ‘western panoramas’ – that is a really great installation. Love that neighborhood too.
I hit Wind Cave and Buffalo Gap quite often because I have to go through them to get anywhere here, plus went fossil-hunting (only the legal ones – invertebrates) in Buffalo Gap and saw an amazing diversity of grasses and forbs.

Following the aside….Tall grass prairie hasn’t fared as well as short grass – Wind Cave National Park shortgrass prairie complete with native herbivores, yes a few invasives, but not bad, not bad. Buffalo Gap National Grasslands – shortgrass – great plant diversity, some grazing, mostly antelope. WY and MT aren’t too bad. Nothin’ there to…[Read more]

Its not a teeter-totter, its a sand/water table. Good comments, but I personally despise poured in place surfacing (if thats what you meant by hardscape…). I did experience poured in place under sand. It was originally intended to provide an accessible surface, but got covered with sand. It was very interesting to walk on.

I worked for a firm that had a really good construction administration person who had no LA degree – started out as a draftsman worked up to C.A.. With his knowledge he would be qualified for licensure, but he can’t sit for exams because he doesn’t have a degree and our state required a degree. He has been an incredible asset to the firm as a…[Read more]
