Tanya Olson replied to the topic LA CO-op. A way to stay in the profesion? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 13 years, 10 months ago
I know this will probably drive you crazy Andrew, because it doesn’t fit into your paradigm, but the available behavioral research actually points to this kind of arrangement being self-structuring and non-hierarchical. That is, in a group of people working together for a common purpose people tend to fall into the roles that they feel most c…[Read more]

I particularly like that this model offers a cooperative / mentorship vision of landscape architecture that this offers – more network-centric and egalitarian.

Tanya Olson replied to the topic LA CO-op. A way to stay in the profesion? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 13 years, 10 months ago
About half my work is residential; I would join a co-op like the Hive or like an artists’ co-op (really a co-working space) for the 3rd reason – long dark winters – in other words, to do my work around other people. I would have to balance the cost of the space vs. the price of my sanity…. just kiddding….not really.
I’m actually working…[Read more] -

You’re talking about this! http://hivecoop.com/
The thing I love about this model is that the coworking space is open to anyone – not just designers, so you might have design professionals, web designers, telecommuters that are sick of sitting in coffee shops, etc. It would be a great source of cross-pollination, feedback from outside one’s own…[Read more] -

A co-op could compete against larger firms because their overhead is lower resulting in more actual work hours for the same budget or justifying a lower overall bid even if the hourly rate is the same. Small offices even now group together in multidisciplinary teams or discipline-specific teams depending on the size of the project and what…[Read more]

Tanya Olson replied to the topic International Job Recruiters??? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 13 years, 10 months ago
This from my good friend who works for an international recruiting company….
1. don’t ever pay – the corporation pays the recruiting fee
2. don’t ever give anyone your personal information like drivers license, ssn – resumes only
3. recruiters normally only screen and pass on your resume to the hiring company and the company contacts you from t…[Read more] -
Tanya Olson replied to the topic Article: American Design Schools Are a Mess, and Produce Weak Graduates in the forum EDUCATION 13 years, 10 months ago
Though I don’t know about industrial designers, written right there in landscape architecture (and architecture and engineering) practice acts is an internship of some duration, which indicates an (appropriately) incomplete level of education and with it carries the responsibility of mentorship from the firms who hire new graduates. If you want s…[Read more]

Boy do I feel lucky to have landed in the firm I did for my first job out of school! I worked regular hours with some weekends / late nights occasionally at deadline times.
The partners did a lot of things right: 1. bid projects with a reasonable number of hours 2. took responsibility for time management themselves 3. were on salary, while the…[Read more] -

I was thinking that being in the west with an EE degree they could successfully turn their eye toward the mining industry and mitigation / compliance. Both degrees would be essential for this type of work….

My opinion – the economy will get better. It might be a while, but it eventually will. Not only that, but contrary to some of the complaints on this board, its not just landscape architecture that is suffering right now – workers in every field are suffering. Even the health care industry, despite its growth, is using the recession as an excuse t…[Read more]

1. if you had a couple of blankets and pillows, it looks like the middle section would fit a torso just fine with the low railing conveniently located as a headrest and your knees up over the next railing down.
2. forms+surfaces just called and they want their paper clip art project back
3. is it weirdly out of scale or is that just me?

same thing here. I wish I would have saved that one for last – I would’ve had 3 hours to do it which would be plenty of time…It gives me a lot of confidence for section E, though!

Tanya Olson replied to the topic What are the best Landscape Architect qualifications and trainings to get ahead? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 13 years, 11 months ago
Hey Chad – do you market yourself as an irrigation designer for LA offices? One office I used to work in (CA) hired out all irrigation design work. With so many offices downsizing, your experience might be just the ticket…just an idea as long as we’re talking about marketing.

Tanya Olson replied to the topic Licensure rant in the forum PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE 13 years, 11 months ago
Right, but most practice acts rely on CLARB records and a CLARB administered exam. CLARB standards are not the law, but they are the (ideally) research-based basis for the law.

Tanya Olson replied to the topic Licensure rant in the forum PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE 13 years, 11 months ago
What you are saying is in contradiction to CLARB standards, which are the basis for most state laws. Look at CLARB council record requirements – there are tons of options to choose from, INCLUDING non-accredited education, apprenticeships, working under an engineer, etc. So if you believe in “standards” why do you exclude so many options that C…[Read more]

I still think he could potentially have a valid ‘restriction of trade’ complaint made unlawful by the Sherman Anti Trust Act, particularly if there is some way he can show that the intent of the 5 year internship is to reduce the number of licenses in the state which is illegal. The law was not made by the board. All laws, while perhaps written by…[Read more]

You may have a valid complaint about the legality of what they are doing. If PE’s and Architects are qualified to stamp landscape architecture drawings in MN (which they appear to be as they are exempt from the LA licensing statute) they are qualified to provide experience for a landscape architect. I hate to say this as I am rarely an advocate…[Read more]

Tanya Olson replied to the topic How to masterplan a multi-purpose orphanage/school facilitiy? in the forum RESEARCH 13 years, 11 months ago
Culturally a textile factory may be a much better prospect than most things orphans have available to them in Pakistan; we just don’t know. Work may be related to family status, systems, relations, regionalism, religion, etc.
I agree absolutely about the cultural relevance of the master plan. Maybe look at villages in Pakistan for master planning…[Read more] - Load More
