This upscale Residence in the Dallas, Texas area (Dr. & Mrs. Jack Shelton)….was a very challenging project. The rear yard was VERY steep (with many existing trees)…..the rear yard just was not a useable are for the Shelton Family (2 adults and 4 young children). I co-designed this Residence in about the 5th year of my LA career with Al David, one of the Principals of the LA firm I was working for. We had the challenge of creating a design that was both useful and aesthetic.
The front yard was reasonably flat, but, it was heavily planted and irrigated along with a unique redwood mailbox we designed.
For the rear yard, we developed a series of redwood platforms and redwood steps (with redwood handrails). A round redwood hot tub was located adjacent to the patio up near the back of the Residence (we specified a redwood cover for the hot tub (that had a LOCK, so the Parents could ensure the lock tub was always locked down and safe from the kids).
There are, I believe (3) redwood decks….the lower redwood deck is approx. 45 ft. x 35 ft. in size. There is a square stone
planter that extends up thru the redwood deck approx. 4 ft…..with flowering pants inside of it. There were approx. 7 large existing trees that we saved…..and they all extend up through the large lower redwood deck. At the far end of the lower redwood deck, we design a redwood Shade Arbor Swing….using 4 x 6 posts for vertical support; those posts extended down below the deck and were mounted on top of concrete piers (as there is an existing stream bed at the bottom of the back yard that floods during heavy rains (and that water flow could undermind the structural integrity of redwood posts). Also, all of the redwood posts supporting the deck were 4 x 6 in size, spaced a bit closer than normal to ensure additional strength and support for the large lower deck. The redwood pickets were spaced approx. 3 inches apart, as we were concerned about the safety of the young children in the family….as it is about a 10 foot drom from the redwood deck down to the creek below. There are redwood steps that lead down from the large lower deck that leads to a children’s play fort…where they can play when the creek is low. Lighting was installed in the trees that towered above the large lower deck….for safety and night time entertainment. The rear yard was also heavily landscaped with an irrigation system.
