Well, I tend to believe…that the U.S. Bureau of Statistics who make these job forecasts don’t just pull a figure out of the sky; they most likely use a wide variety of factors or criteria in reaching their conclusions.
So, I think the U.S. Bureau of Statistics took into account…issues like people changing career paths, LAs losing their jobs,…[Read more]

I’d like to respond to your comments on this topic, Andrew.
First & foremost, the “Design” has to be outstanding, creative, in budget and meets all of the clients’ criteria. During the Preliminary Design Process, IMO, you don’t need to be or shouldn’t be on computer software…if you don’t know HOW to sketch or draw/design “by hand”, you need to…[Read more]

I KNEW……it was just a “matter of time”, when I would see that young Landscape Architects would begin to search for
COMPUTER SOFTWARE programs that would actually DO the Landscape Architectural Design work FOR THEM. IF we had software programs that could do all of the skills and had very creative design abilities……we could just eliminate…[Read more]
July 19th…..again, looking at the LAND 8 job board today. 95% of the LA job openings are in locations like California, CT., New York…high cost of living and high state income tax states. I see a few jobs located in Florida…but, you have to be aware that the State of Florida requires a pretty challenging “State of Florida Landscape…[Read more]
P.S……But, as beautiful as many parts of the State of Colorado are……I plan to avoid that State! Just read where at “Colorado State University” located in the Denver area, will no longer allow words like “America, American or signs with similar words on their campus”…..unbelievable. OK, then you have the fact that Colorado was I believed…[Read more]
Excellent article and impressive project! It’s great to know there are outstanding LA firms out there who have the experience and talent to take on environmental projects like this one in Denver. I’d be curious to know……what “Design Workshop” feels about the recently introduced “New Green Deal” concept for America?
P.S. from Bob. I agree with you Mark…good suggestions. I really don’t know the DB business for LAs very well. My background has been ONLY with LA design firms (and my own). Like you, the first several yrs. working in LA firms (about 5 plus yrs.) I was mostly producing final construction/planting plans (that were by senior designers); and base…[Read more]

Well, no, I am not a “female”, but, a male who has been practicing Landscape Architecture since 1977. I’m about to turn 70 years old in a few months….and I definitely sympathize with your situation.
You really DO need “design experience” to move forward in your design career. And, it doesn’t sound like you’re…[Read more]
OK, it’s now 2019. I’ve done a little research on-line trying to get a handle on what Landscape Architect’s salaries are these days.
There has been a lot of talk in the news lately about “free college educations”…and college graduates with huge college loan debts they can pay off. Is the COST of a a 4 or 5 year LA degree really worth it?
I’m on the verge of retiring from the Landscape Architecture profession…..after almost 42 yrs. of practicing. Although, I totally enjoyed my design career, IMO, our profession’s future doesn’t look very bright.
The U.S. Bureau of Statistics shows that over the next 10 years, there will be ONLY a 6% job increase OR approximately 16,000 jobs.…[Read more]
July 7, 2019……Once again, let’s look at the LAND 8 “Job Board”. 95% of the jobs
are located in places like California, New York, CT., Washington State, etc. Only a couple of jobs are in locations where the cost of living is reasonable and where there are no State Income Taxes.
People and corporations are leaving both California & New…[Read more]
Speaking of Seattle. Most of what we are seeing and hearing in the news about Seattle is how BAD the homelessness is getting & how Conservatives are being attacked on the streets by Liberals. Why not get citizens “engaged” in resolving those problems???
Just a P.S. here…I’m a little “off topic” here, but, I think it sort of helps with my point of view on this TOPIC of what cities an LA might wish to work in.
Example: AMAZON is going to build a HUGE Billion dollar facility in Arlington, Virginia. And, employee thousands of people with average salaries of $150k per year. Sounds good. But, let’s…[Read more]
Well written article….interesting!
But, in doing a little “research”, I learned that 80% of the World’s population lives near “coastal areas”. And, the number of people moving to coastal cities is increasing (not decreasing).
Does anyone else see this as “part of the problem here”?
Of course, living along the California coastline,…[Read more]
June 13, 2019…..I noted on the “ABOUT” section here on LAND 8 that there are a total of 19,000 user accounts. But, today, I counted ONLY (61) LAND 8 members what have been active on the LAND 8 site during the past (30) days.
IMO….only (61) members out of 19,000 participating here during the past month is really LOW.
I personally would like…[Read more]
Oh, Andrew…I definitely “agree” with much of what you have stated in your comments above.
And, I have to say that it’s nice to learn there really ARE some Conservatives in your State. IMO, having President Trump in the White House is a “plus” for our economy as well as the Landscape Architecture Profession. Development here in the Dallas/Ft.…[Read more]
P.S….June 11, 2019
Tonight, I counted approx. (60) LAND 8 members who have been active in the past 30 days….ONLY 60 members out of 19,000? Curious as to WHY there seems to be so little participation from so many members?
LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT’S INTERNISHIP
I’m curious what other LAs feel is an appropriate number of years being in an “internship” position? I realize, it really depends somewhat on the type of design firm an LA goes to work for…whether it’s a traditional Landscape Architecture Firm, a Landscape Contractor, a Landscape Design Build Co., a Civil…[Read more]
Let’s talk “Global Warming” and “Climate Change” a bit. I recently read an extensive article written by Dr. Patrick Moore, PhD (Environmentalist and one of the 2 original founders of Greenpeace). He left that organization as he no longer agreed with their philosophies. Dr. Moore earned his PhD in Environmental Sciences in 1971.
I highly recommend…[Read more]
