For this Multi-Family Development (existing) in Austin, Texas, the Developer was based out of Chicago. The CEO wanted the existing raised deck completely re-designed, go with a redwood Pool Deck material & add a “man-made Waterfall”…that would allow water to fall down into the existing Pool.
The existing raised wood deck was very poorly designed & too close to the pool (someone could have easily have jumped or dived into the pool from that raised deck….a major safety issue). I complete re-designed the raised deck…creating (3) different levels that included redwood planter boxes, benches and a redwood pergola on top of the upper deck level…as well as wooden handrails. Though, I didn’t actually draw “Construction Details” for the Raised Wood Deck/s…..I provided notes and enough 2D drawings to guide the Deck Contractor thru the building process.
I changed the Pool Deck to be 100% Redwood Decking.
I did a “Hand Drawn” sketch of the “Man-made Waterfall”…..and included notes about materials, colors construction methods to guide the Waterfall Contractor. The Waterfall was built using chicken wire, steel reinforcing bars & gunite concrete. The gunite was airbrushed using colors that would blend with the existing natural wooded area as well as stone and rock outcroppings native to Austin, Texas. The water from the Waterfall was designed to fall into the existing Swimming Pool; the water for the Water Fall was drawn from the Swimming Pool (so, it was recycled water used, not from a new water source). One of the main objectives for this “man-made Waterfall” was to make it look as realistic as possible…..so that it did NOT look “man-made”.
I was pleased that the Developer CEO was very pleased with the results of this re-designed POOL AREA.
