Hi Nick.
Just an alternative insight. Can a person who prefers computer graphics be in on it just to sell the product, but not necessarily to ensure that the design of the product has been thought out? I mean, between designers, we almost unanimously agree that there’s a huge amount of thought involved in hand sketching. But there are persons who…[Read more]

Hello Trace One.
Interestingly, in my three or so years here in the UAE (where Dubai is), I haven’t seen any reference in planning documents to NU. More interestingly, might be lip service for now but a lot of local and federal laws (espcially in Abu Dhabi) are hell bent on going green. So much so that any consultant in the UAE groans whenever…[Read more]

I can certainly appreciate that irritation. I think it’s interesting and just a little sad that, between 2 people:
One who takes money to teach graphic design and then spends an inordinate amount of time proselytizing– when there is absolutely no indication anywhere in any of the descriptions about the classes that such activities take…[Read more]

Well said Chad. Enough of the mindless bashing. If you didn’t get anything out of it, it may have been because you were all too consumed with your own perception of what you should think instead of focusing on the techniques and concepts. Just say his teaching style did not fit your personality, but his techniques were something to build on. If…[Read more]

Hi Kevin, I have thought about it for the future. I am a lay member of a Catholic Order with a hospital and staff working in Port au-Prince. I am waiting to go down at some time later. While there I would like to bring up the subject of restoration with my order and perhaps Haitian officials. Let’s get this thing going. This is an opportunity for…[Read more]

I agree Chad.
I think I’m still in the brash, arrogant, and cocky phase though.

Well, folks, as an atheist, I can understand the consternation over religion, however, let’s be both adult and American about this. Adults are capable of filtering input and extracting the really important stuff. So who gives a damn that Mike believes in God or that he uses that concept to make his point(s). His point is that orange and blue work…[Read more]

The problem with a lot of infill and TOD is that it becomes entirely unaffordable for those who need it most-people who dont own cars or cant afford to drive an hour to work and get groceries, and etc..
Some of the rowhomes built alon commons park are going for upward of a million dollars and the metro apts near union station are close to $2k a month.

There’s a quote: Always design something according to it’s larger context…A door in a house, a house in a city plan, a city plan in an environmnnet..’ or something like that..

Now we’ve got a discussion going..
I like the term ‘rapid-cycling’ and use it almost everyday, though I cant remember where it actually comes from. I agree that Lin’s workshop and technique is about rapid cycling in graphic communication of design more so than the style.
I dont particularly care for the style and admittedly have never taken his…[Read more]

I attended one of Mike’s 2-day events. While some of the disparaging descriptors used in this thread may be true, I assert these harsh attitudes completely miss something about the man and what he does. First, he is a business genius…wouldn’t you like to be doing something you absolutely love to do and make oodles of cash doing it? His…[Read more]

Activiy – experience – requirement
Circulation is an activity that takes place in every park to one degree or another. It is our job to determine the appropriate experience for the user(s). Then we need to figure out the physical requirements to achieve that experience. I think that Lugman is in search of information on what some of those…[Read more]

Roland is certainly correct, we all remember the park in the middle of I think it was Chevy Chase that was just a flat city block covered with fake grass – extremely popular, the right place for public space..
and Nick, how is going through undefined woods to a destination NOTa path? Even the way you describe it – you are describing a path….…[Read more]

I’m not sure whether people will completely disagree with me on this or not. I’d say one of most important things for a successful park, and, unfortunately, something we LA’s have little control over, is what surrounds the park. If you have a single type of use, like residential, then you will only get people using the park when they are home from…[Read more]

I just got back from the two week workshop in Kansas and loved it. Mike has a unique style in his presentation, but I for one was just there to refine my graphic skills. He keeps it light for the long hours in the studio, which is always appreciated. Who wants to sit in one spot for two weeks with a spiceless presenter and fight nodding off?
He…[Read more]
