Stormwater 16 years, 5 months agoWell said Mark, our proffesion is so variable that it makes it easy for others to put us in a box on one side of it which I find to be simply ‘lanscaping’. We need to work together as a profession to be “armed with facts and calculations” to give creditability to the profession across the board.
Happy Thanksgiving!

Boilerplater replied to the topic landscape as playground? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 16 years, 5 months ago
I beleive its largely due to the overly litigious society we have. The LAs want to shift liability over to the play equipment manufacturers, or their insurer requires them to do so. Schools also want play areas that are easy to police by teachers & aides. They don’t want places where kids can hide or where perverts & kidnappers might hide. Clear…[Read more]

So I guess in Oklahoma they aren’t a “field succession” tree like they are in the northeast? There it is part of the stages when old farm fields revert back to hardwood forest. Are you hinting that harvesting for use in furniture would be a better use? $100K is such a miniscule bit of the stimulus. Not worth making a stink about.

Thank you all very much for your thoughts
I do have vectorworks already, just havent taken the plunge yet.
Since my post ive purchased Vray, so now I have my work cut out learning the two software programs, I’ll post my first Sketchup rendered image when finished here.
Again Thank you for your time
Best, Kerry

Vray isn’t a stand alone renderer as far as I know. You can’t export to it. You export to a software that has it – Max, Maya, Rhino, Sketchup etc.
Renderworks is pretty weak if you are going for anything beyond basic, from looking it seems like Artlantis makes a export plugin for Vectorworks or some people export to Cinema4D. You would just have…[Read more]

Stormwater 16 years, 5 months agoThis issue is complicated and to say that rain gardens are the answer is not much different than the traditional infrastructure approach, where one solution can solve all problems. In most instances and geographic locations, the solution needs to include water quality and quantity solutions to solve the problem. Rain gardens, bio-swales and…[Read more]

I am quite familiar with ‘livable streets’ – went to school with his son – he had a really ironic and tragic death..(appleyard)..and woonerfs..You may be right, the shared street concept may be more from woonerfs. but it is really in vogue, and I really hate it..I judge it very harshly, sorry..The amount of resistance one gets from designers, for…[Read more]

Xerophytic Landscapes 16 years, 5 months agoJust a thought from Soil Science perspective on reducing the water requirements for any plant. Use lots of organic material and or peat moss around the plant,(not too much) and surround other areas with sand. Make sure the drip is going on the water holding material. Sand has the lowest affinity for water while clay has the highest and organic…[Read more]

Katherine, I heard the meeting was real good and generated a lot of good thoughts. You are right we need the nurseryman on board, we also need the contractors on board and as a complete green industry we need to inform the GC’s so we get and keep sites prepared the correct way. The shift in thinking needs to be happening where landscape is not the…[Read more]

Trace, I guess this is somewhat off-topic, but I want to address what you said about areas where pedestrians and bikes share the street with the car.
Shared streets are a tough sell for Americans. The concept seems very counter-intuitive to us. Oddly enough, people don’t seem to object much at all after they are installed, though. There’s a small…[Read more] -

Hi Kerry , We have been using Vectorworks( mac verseion) for 6 years for our 2D and 3D Landscape and Product Design work. We also use Renderworks that comes with Vectorworks and it works really well . It has some performance issues like most 3D rendering programs, but soon we will upgrade to the new Imac 27inch with Quad processor , so performance…[Read more]

“Blame it on the Rain” – Milli Vanilli
Well, not really. I just wanted to quote them! Policy is a difficult thing. Until every land owner is charged by the city for the real cost of thier stormwater impacts from a pre development hydrology, there will be uncecesary systems put ini place.
The cool thing about rain gardens is that for…[Read more] -

Good comments. It is annoying to listen to disciples of the “new” green movement who lack the understanding necessary to design facilities that actually work and can be maintained (sustained). Even here in the NW we have LID facilities being required in locations where they just will not work.

I wrote elsewhere, that i think the principles of New Urbanism have been around for long enough that we can address how they function in reality..One thing I really object to, as a lifelong pedestrian, is the concept of putting cars/people/bikes in the same space..Ok, it’s great to make the cars slow down, etc..but I feel reallly strongly that…[Read more]

Stormwater 16 years, 5 months agoRobin, not to be a sceptic: I have recently moved to hawaii though spent the last 5 years in the califonia working for a large engineering firm. It is difficult to get buy in from the engineers as the systems are simply not as functional there as they are in the NW. The reason for this is that the NW has rain year round whereas cali has no rain…[Read more]

Graphics 16 years, 5 months agoJames Richards is great. I love his simple color palette. He blends darker colors in his lighter colors to make things look cohesive.
