I think we are in desperate need of a replacement for the ASLA. It seems to me like they overcharge for everything and do very little in the interests of common Landscape Architects. Maybe it would be best to start a new organization first and be an advocate for “livable wages and contemporary professional norms” rather than a union. If you…[Read more]

Therapeutic Landscapes Network 16 years, 5 months agoHi there,
nice to see this group on L8L. I’m hoping to find information, reference, or anything else that can help me doing my thesis about healing garden and its relation with the patient’s health recovery. Esp. the design concept and its criteria. So far, i have a few articles by Cooper Marcus and Marni Barnes, and also Ulrika. Anyone can tell…[Read more]

They are not interchagable. Obviously, AIA means you are a full member of AIA. You must be registered/licensed to be a full member of AIA. Non licensed architects use ‘Associate AIA’. If you are registered, but not a member of AIA, then you use RA.
It’s tricky with LA’s because you did not used to have to be licensed to use the full ASLA…[Read more]

Good point Nick, one that our professor’s kept pushing at school…until our profession holds quantifiable evidence of it’s impact we will have little grounds to prove our worth. I do like having a benchmark to guide those wishing to design sustainably that may not have as much experience in the area. Has anyone heard of potential projects for…[Read more]

Interesting. It sounds like a different animal dealing in urban space.
I think we’ll have a lot of space for program, but it’ll be ‘tight’ still if that makes sense. I just remembered EDAW (rip) did a project for (i think) an elementary school in cincinatti about a decade ago that looked pretty interesting. If anyone remembers the name that would…[Read more]

Chris – I cover licensure issues on staff for ASLA. The short answer is that there is really no difference in usage between registered & licensed. Sometimes the term ‘certified’ has been used, too, but I don’t believe any are currently doing that. The following is adapted from a piece I wrote for LAND Online a few years back that goes into more…[Read more]

we worked with a west philadelphia elementary school with Ann Spirn, and the kids needed asphalt – and walls – most effective surfaces for urban ball playing..It was really fun..and in addition, we did a small enclosed garden for reading..but the play spaces all wanted to be asphalt..

Unions were intended to protect the worker from the abuses of unregulated employers. I assure you that there are enough employment regulations afforded employees that unions become arcane at best and a killer to local jobs. If you want a union experience I suggest you go to work for the Government. They have several unions that will tell you what…[Read more]
