Its definately made from resin. Went to the Worl Architecture Festival last year wher the LA from Turenscape presented (nice guy, by the way) He got hammered by the judges for the use of resin….. I think the sub-structure is made of steel however.

It’s also possible to model in sketchup, and texture in a more advance 3d program (i.e. max). I guess it all depends on a firm’s approach to 3d.

Very true Nick. The main difference of the two programs are the learning curves and time needed to build 3d models. While sketcup is quick to learn and easy to quickly model fairly simple models, 3dMax is much more difficult to learn and much better at developing more complex models. I have worked with both and see advantages and disadvantages of…[Read more]

From what I have heard from those working specifically in more complex programs like Max in professional studios you should really like to do 3D modeling…all day. In other words, particularly from what I’ve heard from architects who use more complex 3D software than LA’s on a regular basis, 3D modelers are often dedicated to their task and not…[Read more]

Thanks for the information Anton. You note that the Red Ribbon is made from resin (which seems particularly apparent when lit up) but strangely the text describes it as steel?!
I’m attempting to design some pieces of furniture that have resin insets, and can resist the use of 400 10-18 year olds on a daily basis. I’m aware of the environmental…[Read more]

Good question, Nick. I’d say the client’s objectives aren’t always initially in line with the end users or site, but that good design is about creative solutions that sidestep conflicts. I know that sounds idealistic, but maybe good design implies an ideal solution can be achieved. Since the client is paying for the project, we have to do what he…[Read more]

I generally agree, but is that to say that the clients objectives are always in line with the better interest of the user or the place?

Good design fits the site and context and accomplishes the goals of the client. There are many different ways to get a good design. I see the term “high-end” as meaning using expensive materials, and don’t really think this always leads to good design. It bothers me that even some landscape architects seem to confuse these terms, and think any…[Read more]

I’m not sure it’s so much a matter of ‘good’ vs. ‘bad’ as much as maybe ‘comprehensive’ vs. ‘incomplete’ or even ‘unconscious design.’
I think many would agree that what we tend to refer to as ‘bad design’ is typically design/work which lacks certain aspects of a comprehensive plan such as research, analysis, planning and consciousness of the…[Read more]

p.s. I also think there’s a difference between good/bad design and good/bad taste. so add that to the mix.

Jennifer de Graaf replied to the topic Any areas in the country seeing growth / new jobs? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 16 years, 6 months ago
I’ve seen (and heard) nothing regarding growth. I spoke with a friend earlier this week who still has a job and she said they’d sent out more contracts this month than last, but hadn’t had any come back signed. This is also a bad season for growth in our industry, clients are thinking of other things – the end of the year, taxes, holidays….

Anton Comrie replied to the topic what is your design style? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 16 years, 6 months ago
Delete the word style and the world be a much better place…..I prefer design in verbs i.e. innovate, anticipate, generate, elevate, fold, shift, repond, integrated, include, refine etc etc.
