Hi Kim,
It is important to know that some forms of resin are environmentally….shall we say…problematic.
You might be aware of the range designed by Zaha Hadid (the link above) maybe you can contact the manufaturers? Not all of those pieces fall into my taste…[Read more]

Oh Jon isn’t so old!
And he left Jones and Jones decades ago to be one of the founders of CLRdesign (in Philadelphia). But a few years ago, Jon semi-retired to Australia.
He has an excellent website on which he has posted and referenced a number of articles

Stone 16 years, 6 months agoI’m a big fan of stone in the landscape. I have a friend who asked me to create an Inukshuk for him as a tie-in to the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver (the logo). I was inspired to create a second one (shown here) using stone that had been laying around for decades in “spoil” piles around the iron range region in northern Minnesota.

Good to hear about your responses Aceto. I’ve been looking at some of the allied fields myself. But so far I haven’t found anything.
Yeah I’m just not sure about the unannounced visit approach. I always hear a lot of pros and cons to that approach, so who knows (nothing to lose I guess). Right now I just need income, so I’m probably going to hit…[Read more]

Nice tangent conversations going on here.
I’m finding a very receptive response to some feelers I’ve put out. I think a lot of people in related professions are eager to explore new options and approaches.
Regarding knocking on doors-My former employer had ‘visitors’ at least a few times each week and it was a very small practice (only eight of…[Read more]

We have had very few in the 5 years I have worked here, maybe 3 or 4. I think it is a very underutilized way of finding a job. And every one of the people that have walked through the door that we called to come back for an interview we could not hire, because they had already been scooped up by another company.
Use whatever resources you have at…[Read more]

Heya, I actually looked into U of Gloucestershire. I used to live in Cheltenham for 5 years so it was interesting to look at the school in a different perspective. It was interesting when I looked into it, since there seemed to be more than one campus of U of Gloucestershire than Gloucestershire. Well thanks for the help though!

Hi Erdal,
To add to the list of great Arboretums and Botanical Gardens…San Francisco Botanical Garden @ Strybing Arboretum. http://www.sfbotanicalgarden.org/
Perhaps you can contact a curator there or their library and see where that will get you.
Good luck!

At my last job we were working on combining Revit with Civil. We could easily bring rough terrain from Google Earth into Civil then export it into Revit. The modeling of terrain wasn’t the best, and like RFox says there are no families or components for landscape so there wasn’t much more we could do. I see the possibilities, but think the…[Read more]

Pacific Northwest 16 years, 6 months agoHey all,
I was recently in the Seattle/Bremerton area and notice with some glee, some disdain the recent parks and their design. While I’m thrilled to see more pocket parks and interesting streetscapes in the area, I have to say, the influence of certain PNW designers have positively prevailed. I don’t think these parks were by Murase or Haag,…[Read more]

Thanks David. I’ve often felt the ‘cold contact’ approach is worth pursuing, so it’s good to hear. Going door to door is really the only thing I haven’t tried, so it looks like that might be my next step (although I’m somewhat limited to only doing that in my area, as travel is expensive). How often do applicants show up at your firm…[Read more]

2.sorry, you sounded pretty bitter to me, and I was merely agreeing with the frustration of being a planner. I personally found it to be a really thankless job, for the most part..
