Interesting you mention that, Jennifer – with respect to Brad’s mention of a pedestrian bridge as well – I think this is an area with great opportunity and worth further exploration and discussion. I don’t have any experience with it, but my fiance (Frank Varro, also an la on here) and I frequently talk about taking on projects like that for local…[Read more]

Hi Brad!
I must admit, I’ve stuck with the close-to-home volunteering that I was basically already doing (ASLA Conference and a local group I’m in called Women in Planning and Development), just ramping things up and saying yes to more things. The ASLA/ACE Mentor Program Legacy Project for the National Meeting, for example. was a great opportunity…[Read more] -

I can’t decide if it’s uncouth to extol the hidden networking opportunities (I don’t think so – like I said it’s pretty much a win-win!), but isn’t it amazing the people you can meet doing these things? I’ve found it’s a great way to meet firm principles and more established design professionals (who generally have more time donate) who share my…[Read more]

I’ve been thinking about proposing landscape improvements to the College of Alameda in Alameda, CA – they need it! what a depressing campus. I’m sorry, but it is true. Anyone have any experience doing this? pro-bono even?

Upon being laid off I had great ideas about how I would volunteer. I ended up taking my two year to the play ground and the public pool down the street. It also provided time to finish gutting the kitchen. My volunteer/outreach idea is to make the case for a pedestrian bridge from Chelsea into Charlestown. It would be suspended from the Tobin…[Read more]

I think Reno or a town close by uses sheep to help clear cheatgrass.
I’m still kind of impressed that goats eat poison ivy. I’ll have to tell my parents. Their yard is covered in it, and nothing has worked to get rid of it so far. -

I volunteered on the “Art all Around” project; the major public art / landscape project for Maine Center for Creativity. Even made a proposal for an overlook. It’s a dynamic project that put me in touch w/ some great people in Portland, ME

Very familiar, I assure you. : )
My own story is fairly similar. I knew from a young age that this is where I wanted to live (Colorado), and I headed here as soon as I graduated. Unfortunately the engineering firm I was with ended up phasing out their LA services just over a year later. Halfway across the country from ‘home’, a pile of debts, and…[Read more]

This was shared with me a few months ago and it has a lot of material, most i’ve seen before but some of it I haven’t. It proved to be a good resource to me. Go to (http://groups.google.com/group/lare-exam/files) to download files for all sections of the exam. I heard that the city of Curitiba, Brazil uses goats to maintain the grass at most of their city parks. I will be visiting there in February, so I will report back on how the system is working!

Therapeutic Landscapes Network 16 years, 8 months agoI like new name of the group. Word healing reminds me also of the
intrinsic values of nature, and therapeutic more of practice specific for humans. So it seems this name includes both, healing power of nature by itself and horticulture therapy gardens made by human hands. Bye -

Green Streets 16 years, 8 months ago

Kim, I have seen some examples in Charleston, SC that are using some green street technologies such as curbside bioretention and permeable pavers. I would look up Liberty Hills and Oak Terrace Preserve which I believe are both in North Charleston. Here are some pics: -

Nice! I’ve been lucky with the ASLA National Meeting being in Chicago – I’ve been able to get involved with leading a walking tour and helping out with the ASLA/ACE Mentor Program Legacy Project. I’m planning to do something non-industry related once I finish my MLA thesis project (famous last words, I know :-D)

I am volunteering at the UCSF Cancer Resource Center at the Mt. Zion campus – I found it actually difficult to find volunteer work, seems to be a popular idea. Working at the CRC has been great, even if it isn’t industry related.

You’re kind of coming out of left field here. Nice link on the previous, somewhat less cryptic reply regarding salary data. I especially enjoyed the salary list site which appeared to have some relatively accurate salary information despite going completely ignored, lol.

Trace, how many LA’s do you know making anything close to 100k? That doesn’t sound right to me at all. Are these people partners in firms? I have 8 years of experience and I would be suprised to be offered more than 50-60k in this economy (if that!). Perhaps you are thinking of high cost of living places live NY and SF?
