Martha did do well in the debate. I do understand some of Alsop’s views, but they just come out as pompous and absurd at first. It seems as if he believes that anything could be done better by an architect than the actual trained professional. What’s next for him, interior designers, civil engineers, etc. Hopefully they do complete a project…[Read more]

As I wrote this I was thinking about both public and residential projects. Working with a high-end residential firm will give you a great opportunity to contribute to a movement of incorporating function (energy efficiency) into aesthetics. I think that incorporating natural systems into our plans can sometimes get lost in our desire to make a…[Read more]

Hey Bailey, good question. Are you looking at more residential design or commercial as well. I ask because I’m joining a high-end residential design firm and wondering how to incorporate some LEED ideals myself…

Melanie Reber, RLA replied to the topic Why is Public Art Typicly Extremely Abstract? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 16 years, 8 months ago
But is there a way to incorporate traditional art into the open spaces we design? Even if it is not traditional medium but traditional subjects.
In order to really answer this, one must define ‘Traditional’… as this concept varies and evolves with time, geography, culture, trends, etc.
A huge group wants the city to move that statue elsewhere…[Read more]

Mack, this is an interesting question and conversation…
It is my opinion that all Landscape designers/ architects ARE Environmental Artists in a general sense. The site is the blank canvas and we create an experience for the user by applying our design skills with a practical understanding of building skills. This is an amazing opportunity to…[Read more]

I actually got my first job off of career builder, not through them matching me up but by me searching out landscape companies.
As for the resume id theft I’ve never thought about that happening until now. I used those job sites just to find a company then I would contact them personally from my personal email or by phone.

They are much better than gravel bags when used as inlet protections. they also come in customizable lengths that can be cut to fit in the field. I prefer the grass straw or coconut fiber varieties.

I submit http://poweritcareers.com as exhibit A. and Avalon ENG as exhibit B. They don’t respond to emails and their contact phone # is a cell phone that simply disconnects when called.
Job search engines are garbage. Even the “legit” ones. But there is good news from some of them…..like careerbuilder.com. After I submitted my experience and…[Read more]

Roland Beinert replied to the topic what is good design? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 16 years, 8 months ago
Good design balances the needs and wants of the developer, users of the site and the conditions of the site itself, in a creative way that does not neglect any of them. Good design connects well with the surroundings, but has a sense of place as well. Good design anticipates future maintenance needs and reduces them as much as possible.

Yes, that is exaclty what I am trying to get out of this post. Trying to understand why, even from in our own supposedly enlightened communtiy, there is so much push back..I like that – I am trying to be best no-water landscraper, and to set the trend..(other stuff you mentioned has all been considered/is being used mostly by other LA s I work…[Read more]

There is nothing stopping agriculture from starting back up on the east coast other than possible economic issues. I have actually lived in a state that was mostly agriculturally self sufficient in the summer (Alaska), and had to accept huge price jumps in exotic fruits and veggies in the off-season, those items became luxury items. I believe that…[Read more]

seems equal to me – we now transport to the east coast – california took all the farming away from the east coast at the turn of the century..as for fragile ca. economy, if it is based on water, we better start thinking of something else..there is nothing precious or irreplaceable about california agriculture. It didn’t used to be here, and very…[Read more]

and you can maintain crops year round on the east coast? and how much energy is is going to waste to transport the crops back to the west coast after you have moved all of you food supplies to the east… also you have now totally destroyed the fragile economy of California which will be good because we will finally get to re-open gold and sliver…[Read more]

Bob, environmental design is all about finding the right place for the project. Crops used to be all grown on the ‘east coast’ or that is, east of California – we are a very young state, remember..and they are actually pretty easy to move..This idea is not original to me, but has been written up in policy, design, and planning magazines..Don’t…[Read more]

as long as everyone on the team is using Revit it is very good at cutting time and costs, I know some multi-disciplinary firms are going to it, but they do everything in house and do not have to deal with consultatns who are not on Revit.
