I was recently in the same situation. I was more expensive and experienced than someone who’d been with the firm 2 years (I had been there 4 months) and I was spared when she was laid off … all because of personality differences, and there is NOTHING wrong with the personality of the woman who was laid off.

Glad to have helped.
InDesign is a great program and it’s quite robust. Have used it for portfolio pieces & design guidelines @ my office as well as newsletters and flyers for my State Chapter ASLA.
Good luck!

Thanks Castillo, you’re the man. That did the trick. It wasn’t viewing properly, but it looks perfect now. I’m learning my way around InDesign. I just downloaded the trial version a couple of days ago, seems like a great program. I’m making a new portfolio with it.

A PDF should work fine. Does the “choppy” / “poor quality” refer to what you see on screen or what is printed? If it is how it looks on-screen, you can improve its “quality” by changing the “Display Performance”…
View > Display Performance > High Quality Display (Alt + Ctrl + H)
If the final print is not that good, it may be the quality of the…[Read more]

I think there are probably as many answers to that question out there as there are firms. First and foremost is going to be a needed skillset – if you’re an expert at grading but can’t sketch, and they have an in-house civil but no graphic artist, odds aren’t in your favor. Second is probably personality and attitude – if you’re Picasso and their…[Read more]

I think I read somewhere that you can use a compost pile as a source of heating. Anyone else heard of something similar?

Chris Whitted replied to the topic What should the goal of the Landscape Architect be on the project team? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 16 years, 10 months ago
For the original title question, I think Chad is right – it’s too dependant on the specific circumstances of client, project, team, and LA. If, as LA, your goal is to push native plants and sustainable design, then that’s your goal. You’ll either go somewhere with it if your client agrees or is open and willing to spend the money, or if they want…[Read more]

It’s funny how often I get this same question from students. They see and study big landscape driven projects and wonder why there summer internships projects all began and end with the engineers or architects final base plane. Ultimately this year I have given the same response, only you can prevent being on the bottom of the pile. Andrew as in t…[Read more]

I would hope that in addition to whatever the position requires, that they’d be looking for skills that are currently lacking (or want improvement) in that office AND a person/personality that is someone who would bring a positive influence, good attitude, and the ability to get along with others! is there a credential for that? I can bring THAT.…[Read more]
