If you want to see some different project (presentation) videos you should check this out:

I also have a few clips on my folio (http://www.land8lounge.com/profile/NickAceto) (shameless self promo) page which don’t explain much about LA, or the projects for that matter, but they may be a…[Read more]

Good info — not very inspiring, though, and it does take some watching to determine that.
On the flip side, found a few very cool videos (from Vimeo, where my search fu is apparently stronger) related to landscape architecture that don’t manage to convey much info about the profession:

What does it take to be a Landscape Architect
What is a Landscape Architect
What is landscape ArchitectureYou don’t have to watch all of them. You can usually get an idea of what it’s about by reading the title and the tags.

It’s a good resource, but 137 videos (~6 hours of time if they average 3 minutes) is a lot to sort through. 😛
Hoping someone will have a clear recommendation for a video that explains & inspires people about landscape architecture.

Roland Beinert replied to the topic freeware illustrator-type software in the forum TECHNOLOGY 16 years, 10 months ago
I’ve thought about doing that, but part of the reason I want illustrator type software is so that I can redo my portfolio to include pictures of built projects along with the plans. I was hoping to get reaquainted with the software as I did that. There’d probably be things I’d want to change after the thirty days. Then again, I guess I could…[Read more]

Mark Lerch replied to the topic Landscape Architects and the right to submit storm water plans in Florida in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 16 years, 10 months ago
Nick, thanks for the questions. I don’t necessarily think engineers are not qualified to do stormwater plans. Clearly they have been doing them and are adept at meeting stormwater requirements designated by the water management districts. I review landscape plans for commercial developments on a daily basis and I frequently see plans that are…[Read more]

This is interesting Mark.
For my own educational purposes (and to bump an important topic), how do you see Landscape Architects in comparison to engineers with regard to skill sets in developing the best stormwater plans? What gives the LA the advantage and why should LA’s take this initiative?
Is the engineer not appropriately qualified to…[Read more]

Erica-
I agree, and well stated. Though I see it as many are focused on touting the concept, though action typically falls short.
Jay-
You’re right, and I’m probably swaying the conversation off topic, but I think it’s worth mentioning the notion that everything in our society seems to require ‘official’ endorsement with specific objectives.…[Read more]

Agreed. The term Green and Green Living have been tossed around so much that they have begun to lose their meaning. A great book that really makes the reader think about this whole phenomenon is Cradle to Cradle. A couple examples they give are that the whole 3R’s are not really all that great. Especially when it comes to recycling; they explain…[Read more]

My key takeaway from the article was that LEED is too much of a checklist of efforts, not accomplishments. It doesn’t matter how many green materials or techniques you use if the building still isn’t energy efficient.
Nick, good points, though I think the trend of seeking deeper meaning at the expense of usability has been going for much longer…[Read more]

LEED is a step in the right direction. It’s raises awareness, but too many people are focused on the end product instead of the concept. Going green has become trendy–all of the celebrities are doing it. Saying your green hold more weight than proving that you’re actually helping the environment. We need to remember that being green is for the…[Read more]

I think LEED is bringing better public awareness to the role of design and engineering in addressing environmental issues. Unfortunately, I think LEED is focused too much on architecture and mechanical systems within the microcosm of the building.
What turns me off about LEED in general is that it is inherently objective and tends to award points…[Read more]

Well said Roland.
I think if Schmid were here he’d mention single-use zoning as a contributor to the issue of sprawl and decentralization. This is, as Roland alluded to, a planning issue.
As much as I see the logic in New Urbanism, I think it would be a mistake to latch on to any particular formula. That said, options are of course a good…[Read more]

This system is hydroponic so there would be no soil to haul up. But Andrew is probably right. There would be no advantage to growing food on the roof to be sold in a store. Growing food on roofs and balconies is probably better for individuals who want to grow their own veggies. I’m all for growing food in the city, but this is probably not the…[Read more]

I don’t think the movement to revitalise urban areas and introduce mixed-uses to suburbs is based entirely on the idea that the car is going to disappear. As other people in this discussion have said, the car won’t disappear. The problem is that city neighborhoods need to be built in a certian way in order to be vital. This is the whole point of…[Read more]
