Thanks Vance, these projects look useful, another one of the things i want to examine on my trip are resorts vs. traditional designs and their relationships.
Thanks again.

Thanks for the reccommendation.
I keep getting an error message when I try to run the installation program. It says “Installer integrity check has failed. Common causes include incomplete download and damaged media.” I tried re-downloading it, but got the same message. Any ideas? Could my virus software be interfering? -

It’s website calls it open-source. I am just trying to figure out the differences between freeware, open-source and shareware. I came across this link via linux.com a few weeks ago:

Is there something I’m missing?

Not sure that it matters for most people, but Inkscape is open-source, not freeware. It’s a distinction having to do with availability of source code, as I understand it.

Ha ha great points Andrew. It sounded pretty good at first but your points bring it into reality. The idea might be good on a conceptual basis. It could excite more people back into gardening at home and also bring a new dimension to the green roof culture.
Do you have any stats on trains vs. semi trucks?

Yes, Inkscape is not a bad solution for something that is free.

Looks like another great way to start programming multiple levels of space and functionality into urban environments. The food connection adds to the opportunities for community building, education, and access to a more wholistic landscape, + fresh vegi’s do taste better when just picked.
I am curious why the idea has to stop at the buildings…[Read more]

Cool site and a good idea. Stuff like this makes perfect sense, makes you wonder why it hasn’t been implemented at a large scale yet?? Maybe this would lead to consumers appreciating local, seasonal food again? There are plenty of organic farmers out there just waiting for opportunities like this…

Andrew-
I don’t mean this the wrong way, but have you been out west lately?
Suburbia along the Colorado Front Range is much different than suburbia of much of New England and the East Coast where I grew up. The former I think is really the issue, where once rural communties are spreading into an interconnected mess of curvilinear streets that…[Read more]

Ya, we were thinking about going thru Birmingham. The BBQ alone is a draw for me, haha. We would like to go down thru New Orleans, but it is a bit out of the way. Maybe we’ll try it tho. Thanks for the suggestions.

Yes, I’ve seen that a few times and I’ve always meant to pick it up, but just haven’t. Some of the “green” books I have grabbed have just been “greenwashed”. Good to know this one isn’t…

Andrew,
What is it you like about where you live? Is it your neighborhood or your house and yard? If you actually do like your neighborhood, is it the aesthetics or do you actually find it a convenient place to live? Would you immediately want to move away if someone built a decent looking business building across the street from you? What if the…[Read more] -

I’ve had World Changing on my shelf since early last year, and it continues to provide inspiration. It’s a pretty massive tome, that manages to be both informative and actionable.

Good point about the weight. My father in-law is a general superintendant in California and they are always remodeling those type of stores. Maybe then they could beef up the structure.
