Jon, you started this last paragraph suggesting that everyone has talent and worked hard and then circled back to the expectation that advancement comes from talent.
You are making my point. If you approach this profession based on talent you are one of a big group of talented people. Someone like me stands no chance in that competition. Someone…[Read more] -

Andrew, I think your point about profitability to the firm is perhaps the most important factor in an employer/employee relationship. Many don’t seem to grasp it, and who can blame them, I don’t think it’s emphasized enough in school or the workplace.
I’m self-employed and closely aligned with one custom pool builder. I do almost all of my…[Read more] -

I find AR is still very expensive, although when stuff like Microsofts Hololense goes mainstream, it will definitely be a must have presentation tool. For now, I work with smartphone VR and theViewer.co. Its time and money efficient and looks very good, especially with a GearVR or DayDream. See more info on http://theConstruct.co/betaFor me, it…[Read more]

Not exactly. The analogy is primarily about recognizing the current environment in which you are working in and adapting to it. The secondary point is that each of us has our own strengths and weaknesses from which to adapt from.
I’m anything but the “strongest”. I can’t draw with my hands to save my life, I don’t do perspective drawings or 3D…[Read more] -

Robert: I played piano all my life (with a nice big lapse in the middle) took it up again during the planning years, and got into the second field (really multimedia vs. performance) approaching retirement. That gave my seniorhood another outlet to mix with wisps of design work, which I highly recommend for those further down the road than…[Read more]

Jonathan, I sense your frustration but in response to the “Neither of those designers ever dealt with the great recession in the most fragile period of their careers (aka the beginning),” there is a lot more to tell but I spared the readers.
Two recessions hit me (and HARD), one being exactly right after I graduated in ’74, another severe one in…[Read more] -

As someone who left a decent paying solid position doing civil site plans in a civil engineering / land surveying office in 2011 to go full time as a self employed landscape architect I think that the unrealistic expectations in the profession were based in the belief that the profession should provide a mechanism for advancement rather that of…[Read more]

Wow Bob you’re up early. Not meaning to thread-jack into another topic but the numbers you gave are interesting. I also had a lot of group homes, elderly, and multi-family work that I don’t “show” on my page I have stashed if needed. I saved the technical drawings in miniature but these projects are hard to photograph and were always more a…[Read more]

I look at it this way. Experience is what develops you – no doubt it can be 100% effective at making a person fit the profession (that is so diverse that it can’t really be defined). The education can have a big impact on how you process that experience.
Because Landscape Architecture as a profession is so vague, it, if we are going to be honest…[Read more] -

There are about 12…..maybe 14 states that allow for work experience…..typically it means 8-10 yrs in the industry vs. 2
In the end…the lare is what is supposed to test competancy…..even though we know passing a test no matter how difficult, doesnt guarantee ones ability to design -

I have to ask what state issues licenses without the education element? CA is one with a weaker than most education requirement from what I have read. Most want at least a Bachelor’s from LAAB accredited degree program. CA has one or two lesser degrees that they accept if I’m not mistaken.
I have seen some that accept many years of experience…[Read more] -

I’d say take a look around and see if you can find the disk version of an older AutoCAD (even back to 2012) – while some things have remarkably improved in recent versions, the basic command set for putting a drawing set together hasn’t changed all that much in 10 yrs.
Once you get familiar with the software you could ask some more experienced…[Read more] -

I went on-line a few minutes ago and found that the link had been eliminated.
Now the cheapest link is $598. I believe that Autodesk must be watching these posts. If you had followed the link yesterday……
The next best thing is AutoCAD LT No 3D but still something you could teach yourself. Google AutoCAD LT and check that. Sorry.

Try a free demo of any of the Intellicad options out there. They are AutoCAD clones. They are certainly more relevant than AutoCAD 13 (unless you mean AutoCAD 2013).
