You might want to look to architectural elements. Namely, neoclassic pieces. Banks and older government buildings used classical Greek and roman designs for a reason. Even the building material is important. Stone is used to denote weight, permanence and stability. If it’s built out of stone of a classical style, it looks like it has been there f…[Read more]

Depends on the grey water. From laundry it would be mostly soap. (soap=alkaline) perhaps sodic also. might do well with oceanfront plants.

Within the next 30 days, there will be a several part topical series on this very question, and ones related to it.
Suffice it to say, a random sampling of websites related directly (or indirectly) to all the major design professions, indicate that the same percentages or ratios of design professionals out-of-work since the onslaught of the Great…[Read more] -

Maybe Benjamin’s park pavilion will rival the Taj Mahal. Or maybe he could specify that it be built with slave labor. However, an “object of power” doesn’t have to represent power in the sense of government/industry use/abuse of its citizens/capital to memorialize itself. Knowledge is power. Influence is power. Energy creates power. There are many…[Read more]

I agree there are plenty of other places to get free or at least cheap CEU’s. Our local nursery and landscape association has a really affordable expo in the winter here. Maybe look into that. They are able to yearly hold a conference that is pretty similar to the ASLA conference but at about a quarter the cost. The sessions are not all…[Read more]

Olmstead included rings of oak trees and rings of elm trees in his designs, with the oaks symbolizing the male element, and elms the female element..I think this had roots in druidic culture. His whole park idea was based on valuing the equality of democracy. The parks are open for all to enjoy nature that used to be mostly accessible on english…[Read more]

Start by looking at governments and leaders who have done such. I don’t understand why you think a park pavillion is an “object of power”.
Think about the pyramids as self tributes to the Pharohs, think about the giant Hammer & Sickle sculptures all across the former Soviet Union as a symbol of power of the government, sculptures of Saddam…[Read more] -

Can we add to that the amount of LA’s working half time or without benefits or on contract basis. Of the 20 or so coworkers let go with me back in 2009 only 3 are working in firms and they are not even at full time. For those of us with 10 years or more experience, is there really any hope of ever finding permanent employment within a firm? h…[Read more]

I let mine lapse when I was out west, thinking I’d be able to stay there, but alas, it was not to be. So I find myself back in NJ. Since I was out for more than two years, I need to reapply via reciprocity with Nevada. No Continuing ed requirement, apparently. I took a month long course in home energy auditing last year that was paid for by…[Read more]

Keith, I would recommend to you to determine how many of your credits you can get that are not specifically approved by NJ’s board and attempt to secure those credits from other approved provider associations (ie. USGBC, AIA, AICP, Universities etc) And also check out distant learning opportunities through LA CES and other chapters of ASLA, and…[Read more]

All in good fun. You probably heard the same report in the backround on the radio and it triggered a subconscious response. Or it comes from seeing “Famous Potatoes” on the license plates every day. Weird that they add the “e” when it goes plural.

Not sure why I spelled it that way. My brain switched on for the last one. -

Looks like a flashback to Idaho 1988 with that Dan Quayle spelling of potato. … I met him in the state house there. …Weird, no kidding, he just popped up on my tv right now. Freaky coincidence!

Here is a shelter for a streetscape that I worked on for my firm that I work for – David Conner & Associates. It is in Mediteranean Revival-ish style (in Tampa, Fl) and we developed the design for the shelter, pergola and tower as a gateway feature. Note the scuff marks that people leave while leaning up against and putting thier sneakers on the…[Read more]
