the only famous LA I know of is Olmstead. Name another LA that the general public has even heard of….
we all know Eckbo, Halprin, Sassaki, Church, etc., but ask one of your clients if thety know who they are.
Some people know Olmstead when you remind them what he did and oh yeah, he has a postal stamp. -

Google is your best friend.
Haven’t heard of them either, but that doesn’t matter. From their website, it seems like they do some very interesting work. -

Does it actually matter to any people outside of those who actually know what all this alphabet soup means? The general public does not know an RLA from ASLA, from a contractor, from a gardener, …. they may hire us or not, but clearing upthe “initial issue” means nothing to them either way. Those to whom it does matter must alrready understand…[Read more]

According to the link published on the VA chapter of ASLA, RLA cannot be a universal designation as not all licensed LAs are considered “registered”, some are “licensed”. Registered and licensed are legal terms in the sense that a state chooses to recognize one of those designations, and not all states are the same. It is entirely dependant on the…[Read more]

I agreed. I have been to NZ three times and loved it every single time. Especially Queenstown.

Agreed.
But if they were going to change or use some designation to distinguish registered l.a.’s, why go with a bunch of letters that are unknown? Why not use something like RLA which is already in use by many l.a.’s already?

Northern Germany: most Americans travel to southern Germany to see the castles and mountains but they miss out on the beautiful beaches and forests of the north. The Schleswig-Holstein area is really nice. I’d recommend a B&B off the beach promanade…perhaps farther ‘in town’ (pick one of the small towns along the beach). I haven’t been to the N…[Read more]

I have not yet. But I think I’m going to have to pick up a copy. I just recently got into researching Biomimicry and I absolutely love it. You should check out her speech on TED.com which is another good site.

Douglas M. Rooney replied to the topic Wage in SF for Contract Design Work in the forum PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE 14 years, 7 months ago
Take your former salary and reduce it to an hourly rate. Take hourly rate X 1.35 = contract hourly rate( then round up to the nearest $5. Example, if contract hourly billing rate comes to $27.75, round up to $30 per hour). Thirty-five percent is a fair approximation of the value of benefits plus self employment tax. I would not use your former…[Read more]

Judith,
Have you read Janine Beynus’ book on biomimicry (Biomimicry: Innovations Inspired by Nature)? I think its worth reading. She has a section on farming, so its somewhat relevant to landscape architecture. -

My favorite places have been Cambodia, Nicaragua, and Micronesia.
I would love to travel overland from Turkey to Morocco. And Ethiopia and Eritrea are on my bucket list. -
