As you have a lot of built work and it seems that is a pride of yours, show how detailed your design is by taking strong detail photos (similar to the waterfall you did on the outdoor kitchen. The fact that it was built shows you had all the papers drawn out to the needed quality.
If you are interested in process, include a good quality m…[Read more] -

1) Clean design layouts: I would recommend having a consistent layout base. (rule of 3rds, clean lines (ex recommendation: on the “open space design” give the text the same height as the plan. Blow one perspective up and include a few small ones to support a detail?
2) Negative Space: With a clean layout, include negative space, allowing the re…[Read more] -

You have some clean graphics that resemble the white clean plans of professional firms. However It is hard for me to really focus on where I should start aside from the introduction pages to each project.
1) there is a lot of text off the bat on the first page of each project. It is hard for one to want to spend time reading all of it. Take so…[Read more] -

Maybe go through design competition entries (highline, freshkills -see praxis issue- and downsview -see monograph- have been critically reviewed so you may find it easier to go through those)- often the design concept revolves around a central idea that’s obvious in their brief. I’m not sure what you mean by “big ideas,” but common conceptual…[Read more]

Hello all – here is my latest portfolio. Let me know what you think?
The portfolio includes write-ups on selected projects and provided links for more info on the project. I am not sure if I am just showing too mulch fluff and not enough detail and concept stuff.
Thanks,

I agree with the person who wrote that you should consider a graduate degree in another, perhaps related field. I have a BSc in Business, and MLA in Landscape Architecture. I’m very happy that I got both degrees.
If you have to quit your job, or work only part time to return to school, I wouldn’t do it. It’s extremely expensive to give up e…[Read more] -

This comes to mind and maybe you can research it further. Also I think there is a butterfly one somewhere.

The program is so deep that the more you use it, the more that you know how little you know about it. I’ve used it professionally for 12 years and have a great deal of interaction with other people using it longer than me and newly trained people up to date on some of the newer commands and methods.
When I got out of school in ’97 I thought I was…[Read more] -

I don’t know that you can search by a general subject, but think of all of the projects that are dominated by one aspect and they are endless.
9-11 memorials – any of them, any memorial at all, historic restorations, any type of restoration project (including wetland or habitat), any theme based design (what about that MAC/Apple project that was…[Read more] -

There is a book called “From Concept to Form in Landscape Design” by Grant W. Reid that may help a bit. The first 10 pages or so discuss methods of the design process and essentially how a concept is evolved into something that you can take to design documents. The rest of the book discusses pretty basic stuff like formal geometric versus na…[Read more]

I had similar problems transitioning to CAD 2011 from 2006 or 2007, whichever release altered the print menus.
We had a CAD class at A&M (many moons ago) that was not very useful. At the time, it was an elective and not a requirement. If you work in anything that is not residential, it is essential. Residential design/build appears to be the…[Read more] -

Nothing more than a part-time interest. And its soooo boring.
Still want to get an MSLA…but on my terms, and what I want to study. I’m thinking about other degrees, an MBA for one, or possibly a psychology/human behavior degree. I just don’t want to pay to play the BS college games anymore. I have certain things I want to study for p…[Read more] -

It’s not the ‘MLA’ degree that gets you the better job, it’s the knowledge you gain from the research you choose that becomes your professional value and attraction.
I had a BS in landscape hort, then went to grad school (later in my career) to explore the hard science of phytoremediation and its project integration with design and implementation.…[Read more] -

I went back to grad school for a number of reasons. First, there were topics that I had not had an opportunity to explore in undergrad, like urban ecology, that I knew I would only have the time and resources to explore if I went back to college. Secondly, I wanted to explore planning, and there was a graduate certificate in planning at U of I.…[Read more]

Can’t leave any opportunity to make a political point? They don’t run on party and last time I checked it is usually those really annoying progressives that support local food growth…at least in my neck of the woods and I live in Idaho.

I am sure the city would rather her be on food stamps rather than try to provide for her family on her own… the Dems must be running that city. I do think that there are a lot of subdivisions now that have even more expensive homes that have clauses in their by-laws that you can’t have a vegetable gardern that are having to be rethought about…[Read more]
