Laura, you can design for the homeless every time you get involved in the design of a public space. The hardest part is to put yourself in their shoes, and you’re already doing that. Also, you don’t have to actively involve any institution, department, or anyone else in the process if you feel they will impede the the process rather that he…[Read more]

I don’t know about the change in content, but I do support getting out of the hand drafting test business. I know that my study group had to pretty much learn to draw, scale, layout by hand all over again. I know that many of the older people in the profession feel comfortable with hand drawing fast, most younger people that are taking the tests…[Read more]

I think we have been through this argument before, Jason – I disagree, the homeless are often thought of in designs…Olmstead did it. As long as the design is ‘democratic’ (for all) with public water, benches and public bathrooms it will be used by the homeless..Of course, some people have chosen to lock up the parks – the disclusion of the p…[Read more]

With regard to losing credits for what you have already passed, I completely sympathize. There would not be a problem if CLARB stayed with a 5 section exam. Why go to 4 sections? And why split D? Admittedly, D currently requires a huge knowledge base. It is really unwieldly, so perhaps I’ve answered my own question, but I’d make D into 2…[Read more]

Also, the only LA I know that has actively designed for the inclusion of the homeless is Walter Hood with one of his Oakland projetcs. Most LAs try to keep the homeless out of their designs. Municipalities do not want to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on a project for their benefit. Besides, that money could be put to much better use…[Read more]

Oh yes Trace, everyone is naive and stupid, and you are so brilliant, creative, enlightened, and generous.

Well, I’m sure this may, at first glance, sound defensive and rude, but thanks for apparently assuming I don’t know anything. Of course homelessness is a constant problem in many, if not all, cities. I didn’t mean is anyone, anywhere doing anything about homelessness. I meant are landscape architects (and I probably should include those in al…[Read more]

ps,I was in love with my own brilliant design, turning shopping carts into fold-out shelters, and found through Land8 that the design had been detailed, in EDAH, I think – “Everyone Deserves a Home” – check it out..I also designed a homeless park to go with that, that included ‘roaming roads’ fresh water spots, etc. – hopefully to accomodate their…[Read more]

OMG, I am sorry, you sound so naive..Homelessness is a problem that cities, societies are working on constantly.I think Bloomburg just came out with something new LAST WEEK…For my city, Fresno, two years ago we cleared out a camp and it cost us $5,000 per homeless person when we were sued – who knows what the homeless will do with their…[Read more]

Just saw the thing online..UGGGG. It doesn’t look like a prison, prisons are nicer than this. It looks unfinished, or in a state of abandonment. The design is downright Soviet..or gulagism. What was the school thinking of? In places such as schools, form needs to follow function, and there is a long wstablished method for design. These…[Read more]

NCARB just went through this with the architects. You had to register and/or finish by a certain date, or you had to take it over again. Thats the way it is…there are deadlines, and if you want the license, you must get it before the changes or prepare to take a section or two again. CLARB cannot drag this thing on forever or it defeats the…[Read more]

If it were surrounded by green, lush and full, it could be a pleasant contrast. Opportunity temporarily lost.

I dig the architecture. I am tired of everything being safe, so kudos for that. Kids need to be aware of the possibilities of life, this could stimulate them in an interesting way. On the other hand, the landscape seems to have been treated with indifference, which sends a really poor message. The landscape from what I have seen looks like a s…[Read more]

Transitions are difficult, but I am glad to see the tests be streamlined and made more inline with the current profession. I think that there are people that were failing the tests because they are not proficient in hand drafting skills. Which we do not need to be professionally, so it is funny to test us on that. Now I am sure the new complaint…[Read more]
