I’m seeing the opposite in MD…and among the different allied professions. Firms that were busy are slowing down as projects from a few years ago finish, and new work is rolling in slowly if at all. I’ve seen some activity in hiring, but not of experienced people. And what is available for expereinced people has been part time temporary (contract…[Read more]

Landscape architecture includes everything in the outdoor built/planted/modified space.
know and practice as much as you can. There will be specialists in different aspects/focuses, as there are with licensed doctors and lawyers.
The license is a formality, like with many other professions.
It doesn’t mean your more qualified or competent in…[Read more] -

This is interesting, because this is not at all the atmosphere I am experiencing here in MD. In just the past year every LA friend I had who was looking for a job has found one. I know 3 companies that just started or broke off other firms (including the one I work for), and I have several friends who just in the past month have changed jobs…[Read more]

PS. I’d take any recent BLA over what we got. It appears that civil engineering students are either being steared away or are uninterested in learning how to do site plans. Our applicants had “a CAD class” and very little site plan drafting, if any. I recommend any jobless BLA to look for and answer every ad you can find for lower level civil site…[Read more]

I’m not seeing hostility in that ad at all. The only negative thing at all, if you can call it that, is that they are being very clear that they do not want to get buried in resumes for positions that they are not offering.
I see a hint that they may have been getting too much stuff to filter through when they put out job offers. It seems very po…[Read more] -

UGA College of Environment and Design 14 years, 10 months agoMark – We have had people return from those years randomly. Since we offer the return rate I’m hoping attendance will be more consistent. We are changing things up for the next year so we’ll see what happens. Keep looking for more information.

You ain’t kidding! Geez. I can see their point, rather their frustration. I know of firms that literally receive many hundreds of applications from people who are not qualified (more like overqualified) for the position. If this is a small firm without a dedicated HR department, it takes time away from getting other work done to sift through all…[Read more]

And to prove Nick’s point….here is a gem from SF Bay Area Craiglist today looking for an AutoCAD drafter for an Architect:
Drafter 3-5 years experience in Autocad (SOMA / south beach)
MWA Architects is looking for a drafter with 3-5 years experience. This position is for a recent graduate, and we will not be looking a resumes with more than 5…[Read more] -

I’ve tried to get samples for a very small “green roof” garden demonstration that i was putting together, but never got to because the plants died (not enough sun on my back porch). I would find a local supplier and call them. I’ve found they usually will not ship small amounts specially mixed for you, but if they are working a job and have some…[Read more]

I beleive that Landscape Architecture is the tool, not the product. My training and understanding of natural systems goes beyond suburban societal and cultural norms of landscaping. The challenge is bringing good, sustainable, possibly fringe ideas to mainstream architectural design. The priorities are most often set by the owner/client rather…[Read more]

It is a disgusting suggestion that supposedly nature-oriented LAs might bulk buy Prozac when St. John’s Wort is a more natural product, associated with midsummer and has always been considered suitable even for mums-to-be lol.

Isn’t permaculture and any other knowledge you can assimilate another tool in the box that should be kept sharp? Knowing coppicing, or the theories behind the five senses unicorn tapestries and the meanings of the flowers and animals, or how to sharpen a pencil properly, or arrange flowers in the Japanese fashion and seeing a few Zen gardens, ar…[Read more]

There are many different aspects to sustainability. Maintenance is one aspect of sustainability that we are not all that good at. There are other aspects of sustainable landscape design that we are very good at. We know how to choose materials well, and we are good with stormwater and conservation of native species. So to be fair, we can still…[Read more]
