I think he is getting, when compared to his live-in studio, how clinical and impersonal LA, and design in general, has become. It takes no real talent to be somewhat creative, you can fake your way through it. We all know hacks, and the computer just makes that easier. I’ve seen it myself, not so much with LAs (though I can think of one), but m…[Read more]

The article does leave a lot to be desired.
Jason–What do you think he meant about ‘committing ourselves to the [our] work..’ and his correlation to technology? -

My best friend from high school owns a family plumbing outfit, and he is doing well. Each year they spend at least $5k on fireworks and they are awesome! The proximity to them is what is most exciting.

I hope by asking to be let go you are still eligible for unemployment benefits. That was what kept me solvent for the year I was out of work…
Good luck on the next phase, it took courage to do what you did and that mentality will serve you well moving forward. -

I decided that it really does not matter, so I updated my profile.

Thank you, James, for sharing that Landscape Invocation link…good content.
FYI, I have found that the mountain villages in the Bernese Oberlands in Switzerland, demonstrate a very interesting integration of all uses of plants…with limited arable land due to very steep slopes…some valleys and villages have been organizing sustainability…[Read more] -

Hi Bret,
You wrote, above: “The idea that our overwhelming priority in our work is to make things meet visual standards first has been nagging me since my first year of university.”
I understand your concern on that. Doesn’t that make Landscape Architecture something rather transitory…disposable…a commodity…a fickle piece of fashion w…[Read more] -

Hi Roland,
You wrote, above: “We sometimes design without thinking too much about the long term maintenance of a project, for example.”
I see that in my work, too.
Then the next question is obvious: How can a profession such as Landscape Architecture claim sustainability without a strong contribution in short, medium and long term maintenance? -

The Statue of Liberty Centennial celebration, 1986 from lower Manhattan

It was better in person, of course, because choreographed firework displays from barges wrapped around the lower part of Manhattan island. -

For the past few years, I’ve been able to see a good deal of the fireworks in DC from the Speaker’s balcony of the US Capitol. I don’t get to see much of the concert or all the fireworks because I am working, but what I do see is quite something. Luckily, I get to see much of the concert the night before at dress rehersals.

I would agree with one caveat–I think it is difficult, if not impossible for true ‘entry levels’ to find jobs as well as more experienced ‘middle management’ types.
I’m working part time at a large form now and see this structure. The ‘skeleton crew’ staff is comosed mostly of ‘junior levels’ wqith say 3-6 years experience and a few partners o…[Read more] -

I’ve seen that structure as well, mostly at very small firms. But there is a drawback to that. You are leaving the junior staff pretty much to their own devices and are taking risk with document production and errors. The experienced LA will also be faster with creation of documents, and getting them right the first time. The middle person can…[Read more]

You are dead on in your analysis Andrew. Most firms I know currently have a “barbell” structure. They are composed of the partners and the junior production staff. Everyone at the firm has less than 5 years experience or more than 20 years. Middle management need not apply. I still think it is quite hard for young people coming out of school to…[Read more]
