Sketchup is a tricky thing. You CAN get decent results with careful material work in sketchup itself, but its hard, and without bump/displacement mapping and reflections, its limited. Daniel Tal is a big fan of the ShaderLight plugin. It gives him some really good work, with the ease of modeling of SketchUp.
I am using a program called The…[Read more] -

It’s for this exact reason why I’m not a fan of Sketchup for the standard office design process. It works well for finished 1-off images after they’ve had a good amount of post-processing in Photoshop, but what happens if the client comes in and asks for a change? What if a building needs to be rotated, a road realigned, or grading revised? What…[Read more]

Photoshop. Just do the base stuff in SU, then photoshop the sh*t out of it. I believe cs4 onward has a 3d function that allows easier editing, and lets be honest, SU does not look good.
In my humble opinion its called sketchup, not finalproductup for a reason! -

Hi Nicole, glad to see your still in Florida.
I was working in SKP pretty heavily last year and ended up diving into the rendering engines. They are absolutely worth the time to learn as they can produce some amazing results relatively quickly once you have the model set up. I did my research into the various engines and I really wanted Vue, but…[Read more] -

Hello Nicole,
The use of jpgs for plants help me a lot to give a more realistic sense in my Sketch Up designs ! I recently found a very useful tutorial about it on Youtube this one :http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rqWVKrPd_8E You will need images of the plants you want to add in your design proposal and Photoshop as well. In addition, a design in…[Read more] -

Hi Leigha….
The shear delight of having zero problems with a Mac, compared to the constant issues you will face with a PC, offsets
any advantage Microsoft may have vis-a-vis software would prompt me to go with a Mac.
If you aske me. Grin.
Best of luck with your MLA,

You mean before my post? Because of course I wouldn’t be responding to someone before they wrote.;) I did read the previous posts.
I have no problem with Macs or Pcs…I just don’t care as much as some people. We are not shopping for a computer right now so I was just speaking from my experiences. Have I used a Mac…nope. I could really careless…[Read more] -

Have you tried Kerkythea? It is free and the results are realistic. A bit of a learning curve, but there is a network of people to help.

Thank you for your great reply Andrew. THis is something I have been struggling with in my climb up the learning curve – when to jump into CAD and when to resolve issues on trace and when to go back to trace to tweak something that I can’t do in CAD. I know my computer skills will improve but at the moment it just seems to take too long to do a…[Read more]

The whole thing hinges on the premise that subrbia happened from a deliberate belief “suburban development provides prosperity”. Who came up with that and when?
Suburbia came from people who could afford to move out of the city doing so. I’m sure there are almost as many reasons why they moved out there as there are people who moved there. I…[Read more] -

Thanks for the advice Thomas. Very helpful reply. Yes I agree figuring out the financial side has been a good start to getting my head around how long this should all take, problem is the boss is still reluctant to release much info on pricing so I’m still a little in the dark… You’re right on the money with comment about “old school” guys -…[Read more]

I’d rather have a BLA than an MLA (unless w/ BLA undergrad) as a job seeker in this economy. I can understand that an MLA would be more desparate than a BLA. The required internship for licensure plays a big role here as well (internships are a mixed blessing).
Academia has moved toward selling MLAs with the students believing that they will…[Read more] -

No need for additional antivirus, Frank. None. The new Mac OS Lion has all the protection you need out of the box. PC users simply do not know about the current Apple computers and it can run Windows softwares. Therefore, no need for version of Autocad for Macs, because Autocad for Windows runs just as effectively. You can toggle between the Mac…[Read more]

Autocad for Macs, huh? Maybe so, but that’s a moot point since the new Macs can run Windows programs out of the box and no additional money involved as you stated earlier. No money because everybody can find a pirated copy of Windows someplace. You were using the old Mac OS at your previous job and not OS Lion with the Intel chips. Otherwise, you…[Read more]
